    Review by Brad Jamieson
Defying the patchouli-infused, mung-bean-munching paradigm of most veggie restaurants, Fressen makes its own route. There are many veggie joints in town, but chef Stephen Gardner has come up with an innovative spot without any of the pretension one tends to find in spots that have obviously placed so much emphasis on appearances.

The staff is as easy and open as you'd expect in this neighborhood of artists and students and young professionals, just a little more polished. To varying degrees the food helps to underscore this impression. Like those responsible for Fressen's uber-design, the kitchen is aiming for a grown-up mix of sophisticated vegetarian cuisine and fun - food that doesn't take itself too seriously, but which is nonetheless carefully thought out and executed.

Stephen Gardner cooks in a rich, high-gloss style. There isn't a single dish on the menu that's less than intensely sweated over and intricately thought out. His menu's high points bear witness that the good aspects of this approach far outweigh the bad: vivid, chemical-green chilled pea soup; Veggie Kebab with curry sauce, marinated and pan-seared tofu in a tamarind - sesame sauce. Innovative dishes span a number of culinary styles - Thai rice stick in sweet and sour tomato sauce, for one exciting example.

Wherever possible Fressen has committed itself to using organic ingredients, a philosophy that guarantees both freshness and a menu that changes regularly. Not surprisingly, the kitchen's approach is more about enhancing flavors than adulterating them. Standouts among the appetizers to date have been grilled asparagus with blood oranges, vegetable tempura, and a crab cake with a spicy corn salsa, while desserts have so far presented one clear-cut winner - a late summer pudding with fresh berries and creme anglaise. - B.J.

The worst dining experience I ever had - the food took OVER 2 1/2 hours to arrive. Management was indifferent to the fact and told us that because we (6 professional women in early 30s) had ordered a house wine instead of a more expensive wine on the list that we took less of a priority than the party of 10 next to us (who arrived after us AND also had to wait a long time for their food). I have no doubt the food was good, but by the time the 6 of us received our meals, the hunger had been replaced by anger and disgust. Once our meal had arrived, the manager decided to bolt the door and stand in front of it as soon as our food was finally delivered to ensure that we wouldn't dash and dine. Charming hospitality!

AMAZING food. Looks gorgeous and tastes spectacular. Each dish, upon arrival, is rather exciting, to look at and taste each part of.
Knowing it's made fresh I didn't find the service slow. We had the (new?) appetizer style menu, which recommends two dishes per person shared all round - definitely my thing.

Great service. It is only slow because everything is made fresh, so I don't mind waiting! The ginger carrot soup was AMAZING the best soup I've ever had. All their items are amazing and I was stuffed!

    So great a must!

The food was good, surprisingly good and filling (not stuffed, just perfect), but my experience was mired by waiting almost an hour for my sesame seared tofu and veggie stirfry. The bit of corn on the cob was a nice treat tho! But the price....$17 for tofu... However, if you're vegan it's the only high end resturant in Toronto.

Painfully slow service, but if you're a vegetarian, *the* place to go downtown.

Funny thing the reviewer had a "crab cake" as it is a strictly vegetarian restaurant.

I went to Fressen with friends for a late-reservation situation, and had a terrific time. Good joint with excellent staff.
