Ever since Fran’s became a big noise in the dining world in Toronto in the ‘40’s - more thanks to that era’s lack of dining imagination than to anything else - it’s been backing itself further and further into a creative corner by trying to duplicate not the bar, but the 40’s era gimmick itself. With the latest Fran’s installation, however, the brand hits a new low in gimmickry, creating a diner that continues with the chain’s disinterest in serving quality food.
Admittedly, it was exciting to see the surfacing of a new Fran’s franchise in the sexy Pantages Hotel, and really, it’s an attractively designed room - driving by at night shows a diner that hasn’t sabotaged the ultra modern hotel in which it resides. Alas, it is a venue that churns out the notoriously substandard fare than the College Street location. The intimate but stylish 70-seat interior belies the reasonable tab, with large windows overlooking the street and a small brightly-furnished bar area near the entrance. Halogen lighting brightens the room, bringing the attractive room live at night.
The menu, the standard Fran’s template, largely ignores the seasons in favour of year-round favourites, including the Philadelphia Beef Sandwich, topped with slices of beef sirloin and melted Swiss, and served on a French baguette ($8.95). It was pretty good, although the garnish of pine nuts threw me, and the dressing on the salad (we asked for fries) was the same substance lacking crisp acid balance that I remember from other locations. Many other standards crowd the ‘famous’ Chicken Mango Salad Sandwich ($7.95), a mango-heavy mess, that, again, seemed to lack spark. The Chicken Parmigiana Sandwich made famous has pleasantly morphed into a seasoned and sautéed chicken breast similarly topped with melted Mozzarella, and served on a French baguette ($9.25).
It's with the ultra-rustic breakfast dishes that Fran’s shines. The Eggs Florentine ($8.95) - zesty layers of spinach, Mozzarella and eggs, topped with hollandaise sauce - is something you might see made at home; it's so straightforward and unassuming. The Eggs Blackstone ($10.95) is just as rustic, but offers more complexity, served a la plancha with smoked salmon, Mozzarella and topped with hollandaise sauce. Not gourmet fare, but, really it’s a whopping deal for the price. It’s rich and warming comfort food, a great dish even if bites yield soft warm eggs with refrigerator-cold salmon.
.
For main courses, there's a Steak and Kidney Pie with Dijon and tomato sauce ($12.95). A Pan Fried Sole ($12/75), heaped with a chop of almonds, garlic butter and lemon, is a winter dish, as is the heavy Shepherd’s Pie ($8.95) served in a gratin dish over a thick foundation of mashed potatoes. Like many items on the menu, it's hearty comfort food that has been frozen and reheated on order.

9 Reader Reviews | The worst service ever. We waited 20 minutes. No refills, no clearing of the plates, no decaf. Now, I've been to diners before, and I understand the "casual" service thing there, but that wasn't what was going on in this restaurant, since other people had arrived and were being waited on... in fact, everyone in the restaurant was getting ignored. WTF?
Finally, when my coffee finally arrived, it was served in a cup that was clearly NOT CLEAN as there was a HUGE RED LIPSTICK IMPRINT on the rim of the cup. I didn't touch the coffee.
When our check was brought, the waitress saw the lipstick on the cup and said, "did I bring it out to you like that? Oh, you should have told me."
Are you serious? When, exactly, would I have told you? when you were busy ignoring me?
Bad food, bad service, unclean restaurant. 1 star.

The service was slow and mediocre. The coffee was good and hot, the eggs scramble was decent but the homefries were the worst I've EVER had. I would be surprised if they were actually even cooked TODAY-- and that's sad since we were among the first crowd of the day at 9am!! They were old, cold, dry and disgusting. People, we have a frenchfry Disgrace on our hands. Seriously.

Pathetic. I have never had such greasy, unflavoured food.... and we're just talking eggs here.

Grrrrrreat grease. Seriously, when I think greasy fries and greasy sandwiches, I think Fran's. The Fran's special lazagne is my "favourite grease". MMMMM

I agree with the observation about the strange mix of unhelpful staff. We were waiting for a while to be seated so the bartender got around to it and said he would serve us. He then went back to the bar and stared at the wall for a while. He seemed irritated when I politely reminded him that my friends and I would like to eat something. We mostly had breakfast food, which was okay. My friend said her vegetarian lasagna was pretty tasty. I don't imagine I'll go back.

Good God.....the height of mediocrity! I'm completely embarrased that this is a tourist destination. I had the asian noodle salad. It might as well have come out a box. Bland beyond words. The soup actually had a slice of processed cheese swimming on top. Class act! How anyone can give this more than one star is beyond me! Horrendous!

February, 16, 2005,
As a person who enjoys eating out, I decided to give Fran's Restaurant on Victoria a whirl. I decided to opt out of having my favourtite dish, the Lasanga. Instead, I ventured into their new selection and ordered the Fran's "Surf and Turf". I have to say, the food was pretty good and satisfying. Albeit, I am bias, as I dine at Fran's when I can't figure out where to go.

After a hectic day at work, I decided to eat out at Fran's with some co-workers. The location is perfect - right in the heart of the city. I decided to have their Hamburger, my buddy had a Tuna Melt, and another had the Pasta. Superb! The service was excellent. Also, I enjoyed the retro environment. It is an easy going place, with a sense of feeling as if I am home. I hear that they have an incredible breakfast selection. I can't wait to try them out. I highly recommend the place.
