At lunch, when you can sit on the patio and look up the Yonge and Bloor buildings, it's an oasis on Cumberland. At night, when people in shades are still in work clothes and guzzling beer, it's like an opium den for the white-collar crowd, not copping too much attitude under the nonjudgmental stare of the young, energetic staff.

'Most of our staff is in their early 20's, says Owner Al Stuart. 'And, it's funny, as they'll inevitably tell me that their parents came here when they were the same age.'

Stuart himself snuck into the bar when he was still in Jarvis Collegiate. Afternoons would be spent here with his group of school buddies, occasionally joking about coming back and buying the place.

It wouldn't be until the late '80s, when Stuart and his buddies (still keeping contact through hockey practice) would discover that their school-days haunt was up for sale. Stuart, Chuck Higgins and eight other grade-school friends - who had all went different ways professionally - wasted no time in buying The Pilot. Suddenly a bar owner and operator, Stuart knew that to lure that upper-Yorkville crowd, he must first seduce them with a rooftop patio; a judgment call was soon made to add the Flight Deck.

We didn't have the best experience at the Flight Deck. We went up to the top floor. It's pretty cool looking place. We were looking forward to trying it out since it's not too far from home and it's nice to have a reliable neighborhood place to go to. When we did get there we got a seat immediately. Good sign? No. We waited forty five minutes before we even got a menu. Fifteen minutes later we got our drinks. It's lucky we had lots to talk about. After nearly an two hours later we asked where our food was. A waitress finally found it. We had early asked for silverware because people were not even getting that. One man who asked a few time finally got up and walked up to a staff member who was holding a set and took them from her. When our food came it was cold and the burger I had ordered was burnt. The manager came and apologized and said that they reconsidering having a full menu upstairs. I'm not sure if this has changed or not. We said we would give it another try when they had things more together but since then I've talked to other friends who have gone and they weren't too impressed either. Maybe I'll get brave and try once more...

I have been there 3 times now. I keep trying it and trying it. I am done, the food is very low quality. The atmosphere is nice but really not enough to go back. The menus all 3 times were covered in dried food and drink. The prices are good and the wine list is excellant if they have what you want. There is nothing that makes this place stand out food wise and its really really not good food.

Went there last nite to have something to eat on the outside deck. There was room outside but bizarely enough all chairs on the patio were broken!..The response by the staff was " sit in two chairs on top of each other so you won't fall backwards! No thanks, we opted to leave. As we left, we told the downstairs staff why we we leaving. Their response was " thanks for leaving". Thanks for being grateful Flight Deck. See ya sometime. jean

I've eaten at the Flight Deck a few times now, and the only word I can think of to describe it is "inconsistent."

The first time we tried to make a reservation, but we were told that they weren't taking them yet. We didn't have the required 45 minutes to wait around that night. The next time we went, the food (steaks, scallops and a chicken burger for the eleven year old we had in tow) was incredible and the service was outstanding. Visit number three (which, I guess, is visit number two) was to the bar upstairs. The pub fare was tasty, our server was a sweetie pie and we were thoroughly entertained by the diverse clientele. The last time we went, our poor server looked terrified, she was run off her feet, and we watched tables walk out because food just wasn't coming. Could the honeymoon be over?

We both ordered their curry bowl, which was the oddest thing I've ever tried to eat- picture a steak sandwich steak (complete with Montreal steak spice) sliced up over top of an odd assortment of vegetables with a sad, sad attempt at a curry sauce on a mountain of white rice. The manager was happy to replace it with pizza, which was pretty good. We're going to give it another chance, to see if the schizophrenia has been resolved. I'm still looking forward to giving their patio a try.
