The confluence of the few blocks that is tenderly known as Leslieville has been gaining steam of late (conjuring that terrifying word in the discourse of local residents – gentrification). Long time residents – Eye Spy, Ethel – joined by hip new entries – Comrade, Kubo Radio - help make these few blocks a special little section of the city. Fare Bistro fits right in.

The space was for many years the wildly-loved Verveine, a sort of high end brunch venue for the masses. While Chef Brad Clark, who hails from Le Select Bistro, replaced the big V with his own bistro, he managed to retain much of the French spirit.

"I've had my eye on the place for over five years", Says Clark. "This is Leslieville, which manages to lure the Sunday parade of families-of-four, the Jeeps, the Golden Retriever-type crowd. But I'll manage to get my flavours out to a largely downtown crowd."

This wasn't the first location Clark had his eye on; the chef looked at the Cherry Street Diner, and was pursuing that angle for a while.
Location is directly proportional to a restaurant’s success, and the Cherry Street Diner, complete with the fragrant scents wafting around the area, compliments of the churning basin and waterfront proximity, could have proved fatal to Clark’s ambitions as a restaurateur. When that didn't pan out, he heard that Verveine was for sale, and went forth to nab that desirable property, centrally located in the lucrative Leslieville ‘hood.

Amazing food, wonderful desserts, great ambiance. Fare hasn't been open terribly long and I've been back a dozen times. A new gem in Leslieville.

My wife and I just had another great dinning experience @ Fare Bistro in Leslieville, 1097 Queen St. East. I can,t say enough about the place. They have done some wonderful things since Verveine was in the spot. But the best part are the new owners Brad Clark (formally Select Bistro) and his partner Beata. It has become one of those comfortable French neighbourhood Bistros from any town in France. The menu never fails to impress, the specials always excite me and wine list is a true oenophiles de-lite. Beata has found some true diamonds in the rough. The servings are just the right perportions, the plates are allways warmed on any hot menu item and there is never any sense of rush. I hope this wonderful Bistro gets it's just rewards and stays in the Hood for a long time to come.

Fare Bistro, formerly Verveine has a special place for me. I am the former Brunch cook at Verveine, when it was Verveine. Our line was always a 2 person line. It isn't like the down town places where you have a line of 10 people, stations for every dish. Pushing out 180 in a 5 hour brunch is no small task for a 2 man line. After 5 years at Verveine, I wasa relieved and sad to go, doing so when the owners of Fare Bistro took over. It was my instinct to go in there this Monday night ready to rip them to shreds. Get a sick satisfaction from knowing they had taken on something they didn't understand. It didn't work out. I walked in to a very nice little resaurant. Well decorated, exceptional detail, wonderfull food and friendly service. I haven't been back for Brunch, this was the Dinner menu but I must still say to all those who enjoyed Verveine, consider Fare Bistro. Verveine when it was owned by the much respected Kim Saunders, when Lance and Dale were the Cef, Sous Chef, when Verveine was part of LeslieVille. I truly think, given an opportunity, Fare Bistro could become part of Leslieville, like Verveine had been. While the atmosphere was a little stiff, I think it was not the restaurant but the lack of what made Verveine great. The wonderfull people who filled the seats, The laughter and hum of conversation that made it so warm a place to work. Based on my return there, I can say that Fare and it's new custodians have established something that can bring that back. May it be as great as Verveine once was. OK, that isn't going to happen, I'm not cooking brunch there but close :)

Hi Nicolle - those reviews in The Star + on other resto sites from the first week or so were not representative of our experience. Another quality / terrific value dining expereince in Leslieville is to be celebrated!

Ummm, Chris? What snotty reviews? You're the only one that discussed the place - except for the martiniboys.com review... and it reads quite positive. Nonetheless, I agree. It's a great little spot. Always liked Brads style too. Nicolle.

Disregard any of the early snotty reviews about Fare - it's the real deal. Bistro food done superbly (the steak frites would make any Parisian happy), a serious upgrade from the previous Verveine in ambiance / decor too. Well balanced menu, we sampled appetizers, mains and dessert, all outstanding in preparation and presentation. Great value for $125 including wine, with attentive but not overbearing service from an old Select hand. Add this to the top of the list of Leslieville's excellent restaurants.
