    Anyone can serve a burger. It takes alarmingly little skill to toss together pedestrian bun, hamburger patty, slatherings of mayo-based dressing, run-of-the-mill ketchup and mustard toppings, and have it packaged up by sleepy counter staff. Most skilled chefs can easily fashion a high-quality, dainty burger, too. A talented chef can impress with sumptuous Angus beef options, perhaps fancied up with a special sauce. But that's still a burger, isn't it? And let's admit it: a burger isn't a true treat unless it's done by the pros.

    The latest Craft Burger outpost, on Yonge Street across the street from the Toronto Reference library, has captured what it takes to dole out a good burger. Owner Mustafa Yusuf has reproduced this second incarnation with a lay back vibe, and good evident doses of SoHo aethetics. The meal is chosen from a menu written on the wall, surrounded by burger-ish graffiti. The dimly lighted space offers a hip ambiance, and is the great spot to slouch in a booth and chow down after a hard shopping rendezvous at Canadian Tire.

    Classic Burgers are 6oz. fresh Ontario AAA ground chuck, and are fairly pedestrian. Even the Chicken Burger was fairly ignorable. But the signature burgers – the Lamb Burger, Organic Beef Burger and the Craft Spicy - are indeed something special.

    It's almost an embarrassment of riches, but we struggle bravely through, feasting on the spicy Spicy Burger (6.95) with caramelized onions and spicy chiptole mayo, lettuce and Smoke Canadian Cheddar. There's no need to get gourmet with descriptions here - just imagine the best-ever juice-dripping, chipotle spicy, cheese-smothered burger ever to bless your tongue. Picture a great pile of hot, greasy onion rings. Visualize massive portions that crowd every inch of that square metal plate.

    Does the Craft Spicy burger cost a little more? At $7.00 a pop, yes. But it's a heady combination of flavours that gets us moaning with delight from the first to the last bite. No wonder this burger gets so much buzz.

    Love their onion rings and.....that's about it. It's just your standard burger spot, nothing special really. Burger is mediocre. Good place to go to if you're craving french fries. Service is good as well.

    Matt S - I've been to the Works in Ottawa and they do have a good burger. However there are way too many burgers on the menu and for someone going there for the 1st time it would be overwhelming just trying to order something. You also complain about the decor at Craft just curious about what you think about drinking out of a pyrex measuring cup at the Works?

    The burgers are the best I've had in town and pretty reasonably priced. They aren't your "standard" burger as they are all made with different toppings, some which I would have never thought to go on a burger. I love the spicy sauce.

    Really good burgers, really good onion rings, and very friendly staff. The only negative comment I have is that their fries are not that good, and neither is their ventilation system, so you WILL come home smelling as if you took a swim in the deep-fryer.

    Hmm... I guess my friends and I were just too hyped up about this place. This was my first trip to Craft. Despite the amount of people, we ended up with a nice table. My order took about 8 minutes after I ordered. Not too fast for a fast food joint. Anyhow, the Spicy burger was good but I can't say the same for the fries. Made from high grade potatoes? That's nice. Too bad they're soggy! I'd give this place 4 stars but to me a burger joint can only be outstanding if BOTH the burger and fries are good.

    With all of the glowing reviews about this place it's become evident to me that none of you people have had a real hamburger. The benches here are awful, the tables and chairs are extremely uncomfortable and the sizing is off (chairs are way too short for the tables.) The burgers themselves are completely average. What's good about them? Aioli? Chipotle mayo? I admire variety but at what cost. The burger here is a joke. I can't even describe it. It's just average in every way. It's not hard to make a good burger (Try the works in ottawa or the spotted pig in NYC).

    Yes, I think that their burgers are the best in the city. They are packed with juicy meat, very flavourful. The only drawback is that it's not easy to get there since they close early and are in out of the way place for me. However, when I make a trip to Canadian TIre, I have to stop in and have the best.

    $25 dollars is way to much for a burger that is just regular ground beef which you can buy for $1.99/lb fresh. This place is a rip-off

    34. Rick Stewart's Review :: March 10, 2009
    Rick Stewart's Rating: 1 Stars
    Jon Eagle,

    I was expressing my opinion, which I think is a valid one. There are lots of places where two people can eat a burger each for less than $25. You should know that if this is your business. It seems a lot of people agree with me http://www.blogto.com/restaurants/craftburger

    As I said in my earlier post, I enjoyed my spicy burger and would go back. Kudos to Craft Burger for sourcing local ingredients. Now that I know that I'll complain less about the price.

    Jason,
    Are you kidding me, lunch for two people at $25, is a great deal. What burger joint that serves Craft Burger quality that you can eat for LESS THAN $25. Remember I said QUALITY non of that frozen shit. Guys get your heads out the sand. like the other person said if you guys can't afford to pay $10-15 for lunch. Stay home and, stop giving unjust reviews to our small business. I have been to Craft Burger many times, It's always been great. My only complaint is they need more seating at their King st location.
    Think before you guys starting writing about B.S

    Hi Rachel Haar,

    I don't believe I reviewed the restaurant at all, rather the "critic". So you might want to rethink (or think) that disgruntled employee angle.

    I actually enjoyed my spicy burger at Craft, though it cost $25 for my wife and I to dine there, which I think is too much for a burger joint. Will I go back? Yes, but not often.

    As someone who works in the area I find the prices are too high for what you get. I find quiznos to be a better value for my lunch dollar if I want spend the money I would rather go for a better burger since I only eat burgers once every 2 weeks.

    This place i over rated - the onion rings are frozen mccain in the box, the burgers are over cooked low grade meat, not to mention the service is so slow. If you want great burgers go to utopia on college, yellow griffin or harbord room but don't waste your money on Crap Burger

    42. James's Review :: March 06, 2009
    James's Rating: 1 Stars
    Is it too much to ask that a food critic be literate?

    Craft Burger does not "dole" out burgers, rather they charge a hefty price for them. Does "lay back" vibe, mean we're supposed to lay down to eat their fare? Does your use of "good evident" mean you didn't pass Grade 3 Language Arts? What does a "dose of aesthetics" mean?

    "The dimly lighted space offers a hip ambiance, and is the great spot to slouch in a booth and chow down after a hard shopping rendezvous at Canadian Tire." There are so many things wrong with this "sentence" (I use the term loosely) I don't know where to start (or end).

    What does "fairly pedestrian" mean? What does "almost an embarrassment of riches" mean? What is "Smoke Canadian Cheddar"? Why are "high-quality" "best-ever" hyphenated? "And let's admit it: a burger isn't a true treat unless it's done by the pros." Huh?

    John Abrams, do us a favour, give up writing and get a job flipping burgers.

    Trey, The reason why CB is very popular is because it's the best burger in the city period. Fresh meat, hand cut fries. I would say BK is average. best lunch hangout, have you seen the cute girls that come to the King location.

    Was always a fan with their location at King. Thought I'd drop by the new location just to grab fries and rings for a snack with a friend of mine. 13 minutes wait for just that. What do you think? 3 orders ahead of mine, and they all came with fries and rings ... and the cashier tried to argue it hasn't been 10 minutes yet but the receipt was time-stamped ... sigh.

    We're huge fans of gosh Craft Spicy, tender beef in chipotle sauce that makes us want to lick our platters clean. There's also great onion rings. Other than that, the rest of the menu is ignorable.

    We like to build our burger with extra extra chipotle sauce, stacked a full eight ounces, served on a fresh-baked roll alongside onion rings. It's a burger worthy of bravo.

    Small but well-stocked, Craft carries the usual well-heeled burger variety. More important, however, it offers that fading Canadian ideal: service.

    Was just here on Saturday. Not too bad! Good burger, great space. The bonus at Craft is the communal table, if you can swing a seat near the windows. It's the opposite of privacy, but just as fun.
