f you follow Toronto nightlife with any degree of regularity, this will sound familiar to you: a new bar has opened in West Queen West. It seems like every other day a new gin joint opens its doors to the artsy Parkdale jet set, giving them yet another alternative for their drinking needs. But let's face it; if you're not part of the "scene," then Parkdale isn't the most inviting of all Toronto neighbourhoods. The many uber-trendy galleries and clubs tend to attract a certain demographic. You know the type – ironic hat, expensive outfit that's meant to look thrown together, calculated veneer of aloofness – basically your garden variety hipster.
That's why, despite the oversaturation of booze slingers in the area, the Cock and Tail fills a vital niche. Located right between The Drake and The Gladstone, the pub has got some powerful competition. One might think, then, that the best strategy would be to use the magnet approach; just be as conspicuous as possible in order to attract and intercept the passing scenesters. Commendably, the Cock and Tail takes the opposite approach. Rather than flashy and obvious, it opts for modest and unassuming. This strategy (or lack thereof) is as refreshing to this 'hood as a tall frosty beer.
For someone just strolling by, the place is barely even noticeable. A narrow space nestled between Cinnamon Girls bakery and a vacant building, the pub doesn't do much to call attention to itself. The unobtrusive sign hangs quietly above the window, through which passer-bys can catch a quick glimpse of a piano and a double bass. It's intriguing if you're paying attention, but if you're not then you'll likely walk right on by.
Arguably, the most flamboyant thing about the pub is its moniker, a pun so inspired that it's worthy of its own Martiniboys blurb. Ironically, cocktails are not the main focus of the place. Walking through the doors, across the hardwood floor and past the two long banquettes, you're met head-on by the bar. Although it's quite noticeably stacked, your best bet is to shy away from complicated mix drinks. With ten different beers on tap and nearly forty in bottles, it's hard to justify ordering anything else.
At the bar sits a talkative woman in her late twenties. From the way she carries on with the bartender, it's obvious this isn't her first time here. As the night goes on, she's joined by a few other barflies. It's not long before they are best friends, talking and laughing as if they've known each other all of their lives. Although this was the scene when I visited the pub, with the cultivated air of relaxed neighbourhood charm, this could easily describe any trip to the Cock and Tail.

Well, doesn't Julie have a big head. Which reminds me - I read many articles and I know that they are all about me. I just know it.

Maybe Julie herself should check up on the definition of barfly.

Message: dear martiniboys,
i've read your article and while i am pleased that you are supporting this fantastic bar (cock & tail), that is very reflective of the artistic and musical community that is west queen west, i am confident that the person you referenced (i.e. talkative in her late twenties) is me, and as such, would like to clarify that the quote-un-quote new best friends/barflies encountered that evening, are in fact very dear and old friends and that the bartender is actually my best friend of 10 years, whom, due to work and school schedules, i can generally only see on the days she works at the C&T. while i understand journalistic romanticism, i also appreciate journalistic integrity, and it would be best to get facts straight before qualifying someone as a "barfly", a term that is unbecoming and inaccurately depicts the situation.

Can take my girl to a nice late night dinner, have delicious munchies, get drunk and smoke concurrently while watching Parkdale ladies get drunk on cheap res wine and still end up spending less than 45 bucks. Bitchin.

Just a pub. I can't really say that it's terribly hip. But if a beer and wings do it for you, then...

I went to Spice Route this past Thursday and had a great time. Upon my arrival I checked in with the hostess and asked if I could take a look around and have a drink prior to being seated. When I returned to the front desk I had my mind set on sitting on the raised level and expressed this to the hostess. The hostess got me a table on the level that I had requested even while they were experiencing a huge influx of patrons and were extremely busy. Our server was attentive, the food came promptly and was delicious. The hostess even checked in on us during our meal which was extremely impressive. I have to say that I had a great experience at Spice Route and must conclude that those who didn't share my experience may have been expecting a fine dining experience that is not in accordance with the concept of a rest-lounge in a trendy new area of Toronto.

Great crowd. But go late at night, and avoid the post-work plebs.

Excellent neighborhood pub. We saw a great band who aparently play there every Tuesday night. The place was comfortable and the womans washrooms were awesome with no line up, finally a place that understands woman need "more" washrooms then men.
