hile walking along King St. West on the hunt for Toronto’s newest hot stop, Cheval, make sure to keep your eyes wide open. Not only is it tucked away, but the sign is barely legible. You’ll know you’ve found the right spot when you spot two beefy bouncers, a red carpet rolled out, and a lineup of people looking to get lucky; the cost to get lucky? Ten dollars gets you in the door, but don’t expect that to end the wallet bleeding: the drinks are on the pricey side.
When you first step inside you can’t help but notice the one and only eyesore in the place: a gigantic screen, solely dedicated to flashing lights backed by a non-descript graphic. The monstrosity is the only décor misstep; the rest of the lounge is simple, classy and clean. Bartenders wear crisp white shirts with white ties, some donning stylish black hats while others have added a touch of lace. Think 1940’s chic with a bit of an edge. Not only do they look good, but they're also adept and efficient.
The crowd is everything that you would expect from King West: lots of suit jackets with jeans; lots of fresh manicures; and lots of Blackberries (feel better, RIM?). Gentlemen might be able to get away with a nice pair of sneakers but ladies beware, it's heels or bust. This crowd is full of young professionals (with a sprinkling of over forty-ers) and everyone is there to be seen. Dress to impress and take advantage of the multi-coloured mood lighting, bottle service, and cushy lounge areas.
The DJ tries to infuse the lounge with a club vibe, but there's something notable missing: dancing. While there is a dance area, no one wants to use it. Perhaps it's the Electric Circus (circa 1990) soundtrack, or perhaps the perfumed set doesn't want to foolishly perspire. Dancers be warned: prepare for a tumbleweed dancefloor. However, there's an upside: the music remains at an unobtrusive din, fostering conversation and lessening the risk of contributing to your neigbour's loss of hearing (feeling altruistic?).
At the bar, remember your surroundings: no Bud Light Here. Because nothing says horse like vermouth, martinis are Cheval's specialty; take advantage. Save the bad tip for the pizza guy (sorry, pizza guy); the service is worth more than a fifty cent tip (though, ironically worth far less than 50 Cent).

50 Reader Reviews | AS per the norm with the list...the place is a joke...I arrived after the Janet Jackson Concert for a friends B-day Party...the grease ball with the 1980's hair do with the clipboard..told me the bday party has reached its capacity(not the guest list, not the club, the bday party LOL)I already say the clown tell one black guy some bs and sent him packing...I knew I was goin to get the same thing..especially after the group in front of me walked in without the greaseball asking them ONE question..so I leave ..and there is a second line..with just security..BY LUCK my friend was outside helpin some others get in that way...so I walk over.."get me in too" he tells them let me and my girl in as well...so what do they do..attach the rope back to the pole as in to say Ur not commin in....considering i work security at the ACC i wanted to see what crap these clowns were gonna spew at me.."did u not just here him say to let me in"..who?.."the man with the hat on ..he told you to let us in.!"
I think i know who ur talkin about... apparently these idiots did not realize im known for not being turned away at any party in this city..grabbed my friend said directly in front of security"tell this fuckin clowns to let me in the damn club"...yes I walked in right after that...the music was good..the crowd was alright...i only went for my friends bday...the only familiar face I saw in the buildin outside of them was Chris Bosh when i was leaving...so let it be known..black is wack at Cheval unless ur rollin $17 million deep or you have a connect there..once again clipboard grease ball, and old washed up half retarded bouncers...NICE TRY...as per the norm Romeo Montague ALWAYS gets in...

I went to Cheval this past weekend and it was wonderful. We got in quickly, the service at the bar was fast and couteous and we had a great time. Unlike other posts there was a dance floor and people dancing but there were always people walking by but I find that at most bars. Also we did get up onto the patio without having bottle service or schmoozing the bouncer. The only downfall was that after wa while of people dropping drinks, the floor became really slippery. Overall the atmosphere was fun and light and I had a great time.

Absolutely pathetic. Arrogant doormen guarding a completely empty club. How cool is that?

I also give this place no stars.
I do not recommend taking your party to this club. For all you people planning on doing New Year's at Chevel, I would NOT take the risk. I had bottle service booked at this club, confirmed with a credit card and had multiple emails. Upon my arrival NO reservation existed and on top of that I was not even allowed into the club. All I received was attitude and on top of that they did not even acknowledge their mistake in my lost reservation. No manager was called.
My night was ruined. I left the club and other people continued to show up at Cheval and find out my party did not exist. Way too much drama and dissapointment.
Honestly people, even if you have a ticket, it's a risk to go there because obviously they do not take their reservations or confirmations seriously and you do not want to risk ruining your New Year's Eve.

I will never return to Cheval. We could not even enter the club even though we had a guest list and bottle service, due to the incompetent staff. Final result: Our party of 20+ people left Cheval and went to Circa. Please don't waste your night with this place.

I give this place no stars...
Why you might ask?
Let's start with the fact that we never even got the opportunity to make it in the door!
We were greeted by someone with a clipboard before even entering the line, we were told that the club was almost at capacity and that it would be a small wait.
Well wait is what we did, at least 45 mins in freezing -0 below weather and we still NEVER got inside the door.
I watched at least 30-40 people who were either VIP, Corporate or Bottle Service pass us by.
I watched as bouncers took $100 bills from high rollers to squeeze in the front of the line.
As if that wasn’t enough after waiting 45 mins we were told that we are wasting our time and that we wouldn't be getting in.
I couldn't feel my feet by this time, I was livid!!!!
Now I can understand from a sales perspective why Cheval would choose to take in individuals who are VIP, Corporate or Bottle service over someone who just randomly walks in off the street...they are in the money making business and need to make sure they maximize their total potential profit.
BUT from the perspective of someone who has worked in sales for many years, Cheval has forgotten the one golden rule of sales....
"Never make assumptions about people by first glance, because you never know what is in someone's pocket".
All customers should be treated the same no matter who they are!!!
The power tripping bouncers at this place need to go back and study the manual of both customer service and manners, things that they are highly lacking!
Don’t waste your time and money on this place, it is not worth the humiliation and ridicule.

I was recently at Cheval for a friends birthday and got a booth with bottle service etc. At one point I was using my camera, put it back down in my purse and the next second it was GONE! Now reading some previous reviews it looks like this place in known for stealing cameras. Im certain the bus boy stole it too.. This place in unbelievable! If you go, I highly recommend you keep close tabs on your belongings, cause these people are despicable!

I had a very enjoyable night at Cheval Bar, my expectations very surpassed by the professionalism and courtesy displayed by all members of the Cheval Bar staff. From the VIP door host to the bus boy to our dedicated cocktailer, there were all very courteous and professional. My evening and my guests were indeed an enjoyable one.
Once again, thanks to them, and I expect to be returning to Cheval soon.

You know, they say that most people make an effort only to "complain", so I thought I would do this venue justice by actually taking the time to voice some positive opinions.
My experience at Cheval is like night and day compared to most of what I have read on here. Everything from my intial phone call to the end of my night was fantastic. The reservation host was extremely courteous and accomodating, upon arrival my party was greeted by well dressed and well mannered door staff, our "host" for the evening was readily available all night, our cocktailer and bus boy were super friendly and efficient. MUSIC was fantastic!
Loved the people, loved the space, loved the staff...

This place is a DUMP! i got bottle service and the roof from the booth was leaking water all night. we told the managers and they refused to do anything about it... (safety hazard) later on at night we caught the bus boy stealing a camera from one of the girls' purses!!! he ran off and we told security about it, they simply laughed and said this was an 'expensive lesson to be learned'... not to mention as we were leaving the bouncers were yelling out racial comments to another party that was there, such as "go back to your country" and "sorry dude this is CANADA, where are u from!".... we found out outside that we werent the only ones with a camera stolen, there were several other booths with their cameras 'mysteriously stolen'.... VERY classless club.... bouncers are on power trips, shitty booths, shitty service... save urself some time and walk over a couple of numbers down and head to CENTURY ROOM!!!

For what it is (a regular, narrow, mediocre bar with no dance area, waaaay to much attitude :).
I've been lucky and had the oppurtunity to travel to some of the major party cities in the world and have been to Pure, Tryst, Tangerine etc in Vegas, Set, Cameo, Club V, Niki Beach etc in Miami, Bali, Mambo Cafe, Blue Parrot etc in Mexico and Ultra, Lobby, Cache, Brant etc in our very own T.O. and never have I had such a blah experience in a club coupled with such rude bouncers. Not worth it at all. Trust me.
DJ was pretty good, sadly there's no dance area, so you're always in the way of someone trying to get through.

Not a place I would go to again. On a beautiful warm night, the patio is something I like to enjoy, but at Cheval, the patio was not accessible unless you were willing to pay for bottle service (or you were willing to schmooze the bouncer, which I realize is a typical big city thing, but I'm tired of playing the game...). Why not set up a "VIP" section on the patio for those who want to buy bottle service and let others enjoy the patio too - at least get their $10 cover worth of something useful from this place.

After hearing so many mixed reviews about this place, I decided to give it a try. Not only do the doorman have serious attitude but they also need a lesson in manners. This place is an utter waste of time. The only thing I can say about the place is the service was superb - because we paid for it (bottle service in VIP). I will never spend another dime at Cheval and allow the doormen to treat myself and my group of girlfriends rudely. After all, we were the ones spending the big bucks in VIP. We will gladly take our money elsewhere next time and enjoy a club that doesn't pretend to be something that it isn't. In a city full of choice, this one really missed the boat.

After reading some poor reviews online for this bar, yet hearing good things from friends I decided to check it out. Overall it was a pleasant experience; although it was supposedly 'guest list' only we had no problem getting in. The only disappointment was that the patio was bottle service only. All-in-all a good time...

First of all, I've been to Cheval once and was sorely disappointed. Decided to give it a second chance and again very let down. Does not at all deliver on what it promises. Tip for the doormen: if you're going to choose and pick who gets in, make sure you pick the people who are willing to spend their money at the establishment and not those who'll buy one drink in the course of 3 hours and nurse it the entire night. This is business 101. If you're looking for a classy upscale place, I'd highly recommend This Is London. They know how to do 'upscale and trendy' and have been doing so successfully for years.
I'm normally an optimist, but I give Cheval 8 months tops before the doors close.

This place is so over rated/ hyped! I was there this past Saturday and was not impressed. Doorman gave me a hard time getting in, he said it was quest list only. Once inside I saw a mostly young C-list crowd at best, mostly 905'ers and a lot of overweight women, why the guest list?? Note to management if you're going to be pretentious at the front door with a guest list only policy then deliver a worthy atmosphere and crowd inside!! Clearly this town is oversaturated with wanna-be hotspots and there are simply not enough good looking people to go around!!

We ended up having a great time. The Sundays, however, are hands down my favrourite new party spot. I'm a fashion stylist, and there were lot's of industry people out. The guys from Something & Monroe host the sundays, which is why the crowd is less pretencious, but still very attractive.

The doormen are rude and believe that they run the "hottest" lounge/club in Toronto. They need an attitude check or maybe a new job being a bodyguard because they act like the club is royalty and no one can get near. I've seen them turn away loads of people (who were dressed well) and also seen them keep people outside (especially girls) when the place is half empty.

Cheval is owned by the same people who own the Brant House, West and Maro. These people have made an absolute fortune in this business by treating people like complete crap. And yet these places continue to have large lineups every week??? These people will not be nice until people start staying away from their establishments. The point I'm making here is that people should not be surprised by the attitude displayed at these places for it has been the secret to the success of the Brant House empire. The niteclub business is about as shady as it gets, deal with it!

I am a King St. regular and I have to say I agree with the previous ratings. I was excited at first about Cheval thinking there is a new place to go but it is not worth it. Waiting outside saying "oh we are not ready yet" for 1 hour, and then "oh guest list only" is total BS when the club and sections are completely empty inside. The music is not bad once you are in but if you are looking for the "hot" crowd it is definitely not there and not what the bouncers crack it up to be. I have been there 4 times now and each time I have come to the same opinion. No more. I give it a 2 only because of the music.

They are operating on some "guest list" only policy for bottle service which is funny because last weekend the tables were empty. Was there for a preview opening of the space and it rocked! DJ was amazing, staff were friendly and attentive and the crowd was perfectly balanced.
Looks like there is a new hot spot in town!
