The neo affluence of West Queen West is finally extending its reach past the Dufferin underpass. A surge of new business has brought a new touch of vibrancy.

Café Taste owner, Jeremy Day, has spent the last 15 years in the hospitality industry, which includes management with SIRCORP and Holiday Inn and certification with the Wine Institute of Ontario. With Taste, Day plans on sharing his knowledge of coffee and fine wine. “I’ve been building my concept for years and I thought Parkdale is the perfect place for it,” explains Day, “there are a lot of people moving into the area and I’m filling a niche.”

Take note of Café Taste’s slogan on the window: Coffee. Done. Seriously. Day is indeed serious about what he does and is hoping his vision will click with his new clientele. “My passions are coffee, wine and environment sustainability,” says Day, “My motto of ‘Coffee done seriously’ means you can’t get drip-coffee here. The best possible way of having our coffee, which is organic, fair trade and bird friendly, is with a French press service. It’s a labour intensive process. You have to hand wash all the presses and it takes four minutes to make your coffee.”

Wood is the prevailing theme of this café, which includes dark hardwood floors, the banquet against the walls, chairs, the hand built tables and even the main counter. A few pieces of artwork adorn the walls and the musical selections range from classical to Beck. The room is sparse and there is an ample amount of sunlight coming through the windows. Ensconced by the bustling sights and sounds of Queen Street, Taste does a great job of blending into the neighbourhood.

Taste serves brunch and, during the week, it offers up about five different dishes for lunch. Items like the gourmet egg salad in a whole wheat wrap ($6.52) are on tap, as is a slice of herb-crusted goat cheese baked atop of organic greens with avocado ($8.27) and the three-cheese grilled sandwich on artisan harvest loaf ($8.27).

Love this spot, been a regular for a while now and with the wine list changing over every 6 weeks or so I'm becoming a bit of a know-it-all on Ontario wines :)

Cafe Taste is a wine bar now, with tapas & cheese platters made to match the wine you order. It's my favourite place in the city to sit with friends, have a bite to eat & drink some good wine at a lower markup than most places in town. Casual atmosphere, nice people, good food & drink.

Having attended a exclusive opening event with a friend, we enjoyed sampling several of the specialty wines and martinis, as well as delicious hors d'oeuvres. Of my favorites from the drink list, the Heart of Darkness will certainly appeal to those with an appreciation for port and chocolate. Personally, I was pleased by the owner's social/environmental conscious approach to quality dining. Having recently accompanied a group of friends for Sunday brunch, I was pleased with the menu's refreshing, healthy, and vegetarian-friendly selection. The coffee was divine. Impressed by the presentation, we were more than curious of each others' dishes and enjoyed our meals thoroughly. Also, we had the pleasure of being served by Day himself, who was quite a charming gentleman. Cafe Taste is a delightful experience for the palate, to be sure.

I've been drinking coffee from Queen West to Roncesvalles and Cafe Taste is definitely one of the best. In part because of the french press... meaning... I'm actually putting some work into it.
Besides that he will be serving mead at his establishment, which I've had the pleasure of testing at his neighbourhood party that he threw to introduce himself to Parkdale.

Last but definitely not least, the three-cheese grilled cheese, something of a phenomenom if you ask me. I would never have thought a grilled cheese could taste so good... or rather... that anyone would consider making it taste so good.

Jeremy and his brother definitely fit the parkdale profile with their affordable good eats and their great coffee.

    p.s. I just can't wait till the Mead starts-a-flowing!

I have had the pleasure of visiting Cafe taste on several occasions so far and have been delighted each time. Though the menu is not huge, the items seems well selected and prepared with care and high quality ingredients. Cheap too! Highly recommended, particularly for the Sunday brunch.
