It wasn't so long ago that downtown cafés served up a dependably good cup o' brew. Now, it seems, in a frantic pinch to counter creeping coffee prices and make a few extra cents on the general public's most widespread-and once-affordable-daily habit, these old standbys are increasingly undependable, serving up weak coffee and noticeably less bang for our buck.

Then there's the sore subject of lousy service. Say you not only want good coffee, but, God forbid, a pleasant place to sit and enjoy it: not an easy find either these days, when surliness seems to be a prerequisite for most server jobs. Not so at The Dip. A humble but wonderful hole in the wall on the west edge of the College Street Strip, this is the place for a good book or a good chat and good coffee.

This European-style pastry and ice cream joint is a haven to University students and grown-ups who appreciate the finer (but cheaper) things - among them, a primo cappuccino. Any place students patronize guarantees you two things: generous portions and beggarly prices. For a mere $40, including tip, two can enjoy drinks, appetizers, bad boy entrees, plus dessert and nobody has to order a Happy Meal. The service, in the person of a handsome and SoCal-funky blond fellow was casual but attentive. We could have sat there for hours, talking about life and books and stuff, just like the other kids.

As long as you're not setting your sights on Foie Gras, this casual cafe, with its menu of sandwiches and desserts, will fit the bill. The restaurant/bar serves from 8am until 2am. everyday. If you're a student, you have to visit the Dip, which provides decent food and coffee. It may be grungy, and the lighting is harsh, but it makes a damn good cappuccino. But don't expect to study here, boys and girls, especially on the patio. This is a traditional neighborhood kickback spot, with a not so secluded side patio, and a great view of College Street pretty people traffic. Onion rings, chicken quesadillas and the other dishes simmering in the kitchen are the only fumes that infuse the humid evening air. – S.W.

I guess if you have a suburban palate that frequents East Side Marios, eats Mc Cains pizza and the like, you will love Diplomatico. I used to eat here when i was younger and the food was "passable" but it has now descended into mediocrity. An Italian restaurant that serves Kraft dressings and out of of the jar "aurora" brand antipasto is an insult to a country that is known to rival France for it's incredible culinary prowress. A lukewarm cappuccino does not cut it and the over abundance of "fast food" overpriced sandwhiches creates disinterest. Soggy fish dishes and plastic packages of mayo and seafood sauce.

This place was ok maybe 8 years ago but now it's just a pit stop for tourist and Mississaugans wanting a slice of colleg street action. An insult to my intelligence and wallet let alon my tastebuds.

    FAIL

Sometimes the words GOOD and CHEAP cant always be used in the same sentence. But The Dip has really good and cheap food! Its also a plus when it gets you drunk! My first time out here was from all the martiniboys.com reviews about 3 months ago, and i've been coming here at least once a week now. I highly recommend this place!

For the price and quality of the food, you can't beat the Dip. Everything on the menu is good and inexpensive. For a few dollars more than a fast food meal you can get a pretty good Italian meal with a drink to boot. I went on a Wednesday night after a Raptors game. It was moderately busy (no wait for a table or anything) but it took a godawful long time to get our two meals. Service wasn't all that great to be honest as our drinks sat empty for 30 minutes; even longer did our table of food. The decor is the tacky 'random stuff on the walls' kind of ordeal but the Dip is for socializing folks. Don't get hung up by its less thank cosy appeal and head in with the gang for a cappuccino, some Italian pastries or even a decent Italian meal and socialize away!
