Is jungle supposed to be the new hip? Butterfly has been adorned with a trickling Zen fountain in the main level, and a full-on jungle treatment on the second level. Surely the disconnect is a deliberate attempt to lure the hip and thirsty 20- and 30-somethings who favour the area. Or perhaps it's meant for parental visits, so an older crowd can order a premium vodka in the back while the younger throngs can rip their little livers out upstairs.

Clubs in this area are known for ballsy designs and a distinctive brand to pull off the hip identity they hope to achieve. And with über club designer Irfan Bukhari (interior designer of Club V, Budo, and Fluid) at the helm, Butterfly has gone the same route. The first step inside places you behind a waterfall cascading down the large street windows that is backlit by orange light. The upstairs hangout - of which every Toronto clubber has done time in its various incarnations - is blunt and direct in its objective: Jungle.

Fauna, bamboo, and wood fill the space, and while it is spacious and open, it can also be private. One particularly large booth at the back has a curtain that can be pulled across to separate everything from you and your dirty deeds. It also has its own volume control, which means you can turn the music down (or up) in order for you to glide your way to victory. Other than this boudoir-ish den, booths line an entire wall and along the back of the club.

If the theme upstairs is life and in-your-face nature, then the one downstairs must be the cocoon component. While it is off-white with perhaps too many mirrors, this is where the DJ works his magic; instead of being in the corner like most clubs, he is the focal point, the anchor, the party. Butterfly obviously wanted to make the DJ so much more involved that there is even a couch to house his friends. -T.F.

I was there recently and just had to laugh, one of the owners looks like a light brown version of Mini-Me. And even funnier is that he walks around the place like he's King Sh*t!

Hey Mark, judging by your review you're either a)The Owner, b)An employee or c)A Promoter! I too have been to Butterfly, the place is nothing special. To sum it up, the place over promises and under delivers in every aspect! Anybody on the scene knows that Brant House, Maro and Ultra are where its at!!!

I don't know why one of the reviewers said this place was anti-gay. girltoronto.com a lesbian social group holds fairly regular events at Butterfly and from what I understand pack the place. Being the entertainment editor of a west end queer newspaper, I do know of 70 venues that welcome all orientations, including Butterfly in the Queer West Village.

I think there are alot of haters out there attempting to discredit this club. I have been there 3 times with friends and had a great time every time. It is a beautiful space, music was good and the vibe was great. Some of these comments sound like the same angry, negative person over and over again trying to discredit the club. Try Butterfly for yourself you'll probably like it.

This place is awfull!! I arranged to have bottle service and was told my group would not have to pay cover charge and was also told a set price per bottle. When we arrived, the doorman insisted we pay cover and so after arguing with the rude bully we did reluctantly. We then went in sat in a booth, waitress comes over and tells us bottles are $50 more than what I was told over the phone. Unbelievable, we had 1 bottle and left this place very disappointed and feeling very ripped off!! Clearly we were mislead in coming to this place and if thats what this club needs to do to get people in its doors then I don't think it will last long!!! All was not lost, we headed to 2 Cats afterwards, no cover and were treated well by the bartender.

This place is Anti-Gay! I'm gay and I showed up with 2 of my gay friends for a friends b-day party and the doorman wouldn't let us in! There was clearly no line-up as well!! Forget this place if you expect to treated as a human being!!!

WoW!! harsh critics. Where do you guys all come from? The club was beautiful small but intimate. The place was packed like crazy, everyone was having a good time as it seemed. No attitude in there at all very nice looking crowd and polite door staff. They could use more bartenders but understandable because of the volume of people. Promoters were very polite greeting everyone. Love the place I will go back again for sure.

Losers Wanted! Describe the patrons and owners of this place. I was there last Saturday night and what a joke it was! Crowd was a bunch of wannabe 905'ers. I mean honestly, what a waste of money on cover charge! Overall, there are way better places elsewhere to go that are way more classier!!

Ouch..some harsh critics out there! I checked out Butterfly two Thursday nights ago. Bouncers were courteous and opened the ropes as soon as we walked up. Female bartender was friendly and took our order right away. If you are a House Music fan, you would appreciate the music - it was fantastic and the crowd was lovin it, dancing up a storm. The upstairs bar was quiet however. The dancefloor downstairs was packed. We were thanked for coming and our patronage was appreciated. Maybe Butterfly has learned from previous complaints and emerged a better club experience. I'd go back.

Horrible service, shady clientele. Don't waste your time going to this place. We went to dance, ended up across the street at footwork.

Stop, do you not waste your time on this place. The owners of this place are about as shady as they come. This place has the same crappy crowd and music as the old place Tantric. Lets face it a Zebra cannot change its stripes!!

The service is terrible. We had a small group and were willing to drink a lot but unfortunately, the poor service and attitide of the wait staff kept us dry so we ventured on somewhere "real". I would never go back !! Don't waist your time or money !! Very over-rated!!

Great place, havent seen a club like this in a long time. The seating could be a little better as the dancefloor gets a bit crowded, until downstairs is open.
