In a Toronto market that has now amalgamated the fresh-made burrito trend into standard practice, the breakup of the Burrito Boyz was as devastating as the breakup of Bennifer. Like most divorces, the split involved a dividing of property. Joe Vassalo got the name, but Ian Angus got to keep the original Peter Street location. Strangely, that means that the store that started it all is now called Burrito Bandidos, while the newer Adelaide outpost is now the only Burrito Boyz in downtown Toronto (but there's also one in Mississauga and one coming in Etobicoke).
But that shouldn't cause any panic for burrito-loving Torontonians; the formula is still the same. The Boyz (or is it boy now?) only do burritos: a six-inch, $4.50, and a 10-inch, clocking in at $5.50). The burritos are assembled to order and the staff only use fresh, superlative ingredients: fresh strips of plump chicken breasts, halibut, shrimp, or freshly cubed beef (prime sirloin!).
Customers watch the assembly process at Burrito Boyz. It starts when you place your order with the employee in charge of warming the tortillas in which the burritos are wrapped. Too many burrito joints give you lots of rice and next to no other ingredients. And the ratio of gloomy tomato sauce and gooey cheese can be much higher in relation to the other ingredients at many a Tex-Mex place. Thankfully, the balance of ingredients is just right.
One of the boyz plops a steaming large spoonful of rice on the tortilla and then the choices begin. Black or pinto beans? Meat or vegetables? The next choice involved salsa. These include pico de gallo, salsa verde, tomato and fiery jalapeno peppers or the spectacular Caribbean Scotch-bonnet-spiked sauce. Then on to the final selection, deciding between finely shredded Monterey Jack cheese or sour cream.
When the place gets busy, it gets really busy, so don't be discouraged by a long wait. This was the burrito that launched a thousand imitators; it's worth the wait. - B.J with R.T.

These reviews are absolutely ridiculous and a bit funny as well I must say! All Burrito Boyz locations are fantastic, and my personal favorite is the Peter St. shop. For the other reviewers before me who are obviously unaware of what authentic mexican food is supposed to be, when in Mexico City or East L.A., there are no white linens or operating-room style sterilization available! The taste is tremendous, quality of ingredients is tops and the price is certainly right! Good things come to those who wait, and if Burrito Boyz wasn't so great, then there would be no lines every day and therefore no wait for those who expect time to stop for there ultra-important lives. So to all of the complainers that came before me, stick to French 5-diamond because Mexican is obviously not good for the inside of your germ bubbles. To all of you that love a good Burrito Boyz burrito, I'll see you there! Peace.

I used to like Burrito Boys until I observed how nasty the place on Peter Street really is. Haven't been to the Adelaide location, and won't go now with these reviews. This was my experience a the Peter Street location: the guy serving me came from outside, put on his plastic gloves without washing his hands, made my burrito, took my cash, and then went to turn the burrito over on the stove top with his BARE HANDS, like eewww, wash your freaking hands. After much objection to his unsanitary behavior he rinsed just water over his MRSA, and staph infected fingers. I'll just stick to the burrito outfit in Kensington Market (Big Fat Burrito)- delicious.

Best idea and Burrito's ever! My buddy and I had our first full loaded steak burritos today, and agree that they are fantastic. Will I go back? All I can say is that if it weren't for the long wait while they make the damn things, I would be a regular. But unfortunately 25 minutes to get a burrito is way too long during the lunch hour. I got there at 12:45, and I can't imagine what the wait would be like if you showed up at 12:05. They are good, but not worth a 20-30 minute wait.
Sorry.

This is by far the worst tasting burrito I have tried, I dont know how people can say its the best thing since sliced bread!
I have been to San Francisco Mission district and the burritos taste nothing like Burritos boys, Drunken party people will eat anything when hungry.

The burritos are good, but their process is severely screwed up. I have never seen anyone take so long to assemble a burrito. It's shocking. And the grilling is totally backward. Unless you like your tortilla crispy, ask them not to grill it. The meat/fish is hot, which I find heats the whole thing up plenty. Besides, do you really want your sour cream and guac grilled? Usually the staff is pretty good (they work with the ridiculous system they've been given) but I did walk out once without ordering because I was the ONLY customer there, an the staff of FIVE people did not acknowledge my presence after a very long time. Sometimes when the craving hits I call in advance, and it still takes surprisingly long to get in and out of there even with no line. If there's any line at all, stay away. It's not worth the frustration.

I went back to the UK last year and this is the one eatery I miss in the whole of Canada. It was our first meal when we touched down, and our last meal before we flew home a year later. Not found anything to compare to it over here - a niche in the market for you Burrito Boyz! Get yourselves over here and start an international franchise.

Well i'm downtown every weekend for the clubbing. About a year ago my ex took me to the jerk shop upstairs,,,,,,i must say i was a little aprehensive about eating in your place. You know what they say,,,"looks are deceiving". The whole dungeon thing. (Sorry). Long story short,,,his friend went downstairs and bought 2 burritos,,one for him and one for me......after begging me to try them. Well ever since then i have been coming in every weekend i am in the clubbing district. And today, (March 18/2007) I brought my Mom with me. One more fan to add to the list. She loved it.
Thanks Burrito Boyz.

I had quite the disturbing service from the Burrito Boys staff at the 120 Peter St. location. Some fellow customers gave my friend and I DISCRIMINATORY remarks advising that we should get some soya sauce with our burritos due to our Asian desendency. Because we were feeling quite unhappy with these remarks, the Burrito Boys staff told me to leave if we felt so displeased. When I tried to talk to management about the difficency of their service, the manager told me that I was "obviously off the deep-end" for feeling that such remarks were in fact dicriminatory and told me that my customer demand was not wanted. Although that I understand that the staff cannot control what their customers say, I found it quite ignorant of the manager to say that customers' drunken state is an excuse for such comments. I find that such allowance and lack of empathy for such discrimination is a perpetuation of ignorance.

Amidst what is known as Partyland for 905ers, just south of Richmond on Peter Street, is a haven called Burrito Boyz. In an area where pizza slices, sandwich wraps and other cheap eats make your stomach go ooh, Ian Angus and Joe Vassallo has built it and now the people come in droves. This place is undeniably the best cheap eats destination to come along in a long time. It?s no wonder the hours on weekends go until 4 a.m. and lunchtime lines go out the door. The space is like a really small basement apartment where even with the door shut feels void of privacy. The system is simple: Burritos (8? and 12?) and Quesadillas (both include steak, chicken, halibut and vegetarian) and nothing is over $6 (with the exception of the 12? halibut burrito - $7.25). No heating lamps and only fresh ingredients. Why hasn?t anyone caught on to this? When in the basement, the music is usually blaring (my last visit it was Outkast), and the cheerful young woman takes your order. The burrito is dressed right in front of you and they don?t overfill it with rice and beans. Toppings include the choice of lettuce, tomatoes, jalapenos, green onions and green pepper. The vegetarian selection (soy meat) is fantastic so you can avoid the boring bean and cheese. My wait wasn?t during the busy hours (lunch and after bars close), but there was a little crowd and it wasn?t long - 10 minutes and worth the wait! There are about five people working in that cramped space and they all seemed to sport a smile (maybe it had to do with the installation of the new air conditioner). There is talk of expansion on College Street near U of T, the Annex and even the Beaches. Regardless of where they open, if they keep up this formula, Angus and Vassallo will be able to make their simple idea into a million-dollar concept. - 30 -
