The concept is simple: a slab of ground meat between a bun accompanied by a pile of greasy fries, but to Saeed Mohamed (and an increasing group of Toronto restaurateurs), the hamburger is much more than that. Two years ago, Saeed quit his job as a software engineer and opened up his own upscale hole-in-the-wall burger shop (aptly titled Burger Shoppe). Since then, his vision of "the perfect burger" has found him constantly gathering feedback, tweaking his recipes, and ultimately opening a second location.

Located on the hippest stretch in town, the new Burger Shoppe Quality Meats has taken the restless improvement to its logical extreme. Where the original Burger Shoppe on Queen East has made its reputation based on a simple formula (essentially burgers, fries, and onion rings), the new location at Ossington and Dundas has vastly expanded the concept's scope. No longer just about burgers, from its menu to its décor, BSQM is a modern take on Americana in general.

The original Burger Shoppe is essentially a lunch counter; you can sit and eat there if you want, but there's only room for about 20 to 25 people. While the original lent itself best to takeout, Burger Shoppe Quality Meats is intended as a place to sit and hang out, not just to order and leave. The seating area is at least twice as large, the interior is much more, deliberate, and the food is much more expansive. You can still get the classic signature burgers (Blue Cheese, Chevre, Hawaiian), but you can also get everything from gourmet salads, pork and beef ribs, and AAA organic steaks.

But one of the most striking feature of the place is its bar. It's pretty unusual for a burger joint to offer alcohol at all, and those that do usually stick to beer. BSQM is much too ambitious for that. Instead, they've gone ahead and secured a seasoned bartender with as much experience as he has charm. Jimmy Hogg has held down the bar at Mill Street Brew Pub, Barrio, and Czehoski’s, but he's probably best known as the drinks columnist for Toro Magazine ("columnist" is a misleading word; he actually makes videos). Using his encyclopedic knowledge, Jimmy is able to craft everything from a classic Tom Collins to a French 75 to an old-school Sazerac (one of the oldest known cocktails). Vodkas are infused in-house with Raspberry, Vanilla, and other flavours that feature prominently in signature cocktails and martinis. You name it and he can make it.

It should come as no surprise, though, that the focus is the food itself. "The idea is to recreate old classics in healthy, modern way," explains Saeed. "What is old is new again. Why try to force innovation when you can find things that were great in the past?" By this, he means both great old recipes, and standards of practice. Everything, for instance, is locally sourced and organic, as it would have been in the pre-industrial age. Dishes like The Uber Poutine (made with two-day simmered Bone Stock gravy, Quebec-imported cheese curds, Chorizo Sausage, and Caramelized Onions), and free-range Chicken Wings (served naked with BBQ Sauce, Honey Garlic, and Blue Cheese Dip on the side) suggest comfort food punched up with modern flavours and techniques.

Great burgers. i try and get a burger every time i'm in the area, the regular is huge, most are pretty full with the small which to me isn't much smaller than the regular. Friendly service. get in, get out.

I live in the neighbourhood & just love their burgers.
The Riverside really is one of the tastiest burgers I've ever had.

The homemade onion rings are delicious too!

Its also nice that I can get high quality meat in the neighbourhood.

I went with a party of four and we decided by the time we were finished to never go back. Flavourless burgers, bland onion rings, slowish service, no coffee refills, over priced for what you get. I think the buns were Wonderbread brand or something similar, which we all thought was unusual given the rest of the "gourmet" ingredients. Even mentioned the blandness of the burgers to the server, she didn't seem to care too much that none of us enjoyed our meal.

was in early on sunday and it was fairly busy for mid day lunch on a sunday. had the sirloin hawaiian mid rare (servers choice) and my friend had the sheppards pie. we were both very happy with the food. the server was pleasent and friendly (i think from ireland) and he kept our coffee's coming. there was also a good selection of alcoholic beverages (wine,Beer) but it was to early for me.

    will definately be back..

We went their on Saturday after we wee told the wait was an hour at Libretto. The wait at BQM was only 30 minutes so we ended up here - the food was fantatic and definitely worth the wait if you are a burger lover and the poutine was to die for.

Headed down to The Shoppe, as per the advice of a work colleague.
It was Friday night at 8:00. Every seat in the house was taken, but we didn't mind waiting the 20 minutes.

The side order "must haves"- $5.00 for 4 onion rings, were definitely not worth the price. The burger itself had no flavour.. I was really surprised given many of the reviews on this website. I appreciate the local Ontario meat, but can you add some onions or pepper, or something to the recipe??.. It tasted like pure ground beef.. No personality.

And the wait for our food (40 minutes), was really upsetting. I mean there is no reason to wait fourty minutes in a restaurant for a burger, fries and onion rings. Lets get serious. I think they forgot our order, cause the couple next to us (who arrived later than us), got their food first.. Maybe it's because you could see they were upset from waiting for an hour for a table across the street at Pizza Libretto.. ha ha

sat down and waited for service for half hour while staff chatted at the bar with themselves - 0 STARS.
after ordering, waited for food for more than 45 minutes - 0 STARS.
my medium/ rare sirloin burger was cold, tasteless, the old cheddar was barely melted and the bun was almost burned black - NEGATIVE STARS.
lucky girlfriend's rare steak/ frites was worth (almost)every penny (had it been served hot) - 4 STARS.
woke up next morning and had the 'runny shits' all day long - 5 STARS.
telling all my local area friends never to go here (not worth the headache and health hazard)? - PRICELESS

This defintely a place for the foodie - where else do you get a naturally raised burger ground in house and cooked to medium rare.
Btw I've been to all the so called gourmet burger places and non cook the burger to your liking.

Craft is better , friendlier, and not obnoxious; especially if I'm spending this kind of money on a burger. The food was ok, but not something to recall. We will not go back.

I do have to say they have a damn good burger. We loved the fries. Big old fatties cooked to perfection without too much grease. The service was very friendly and fast. I can't say I enjoyed the veg burger much. It was just a little too dry. The hamburger, on the other hand, came out perfectly cooked and juicy and did I mention the fries?

Great burgers. I went here for the first time on a Saturday afternoon and it hit the spot. My biggest gripe with burger shops is usually the quality of the bun. The bread at Burger Shoppe is great. In fact, all of the ingredients seem really fresh.

I'm not even a big burger fan, but we tried this place out because it's close by and had such good reviews. The people who run the place are very friendly. they have consistently treated us as valued customers, from the first day we walked in. Very well done!

My burger was overcooked and, though I don't associate quantity with quality, it was too small for the price tag. Toppings were lacking and just plain sad. The fries were not of the crisp variety, but they were tasty.

I prefer a Lick's burger, for much less money.

It's in my neighbourhood, so it was a real letdown.

This new burger spot has a cool atmosphere, and the burgers are cheesy beyond belief - and grilled perfectly, cocktails are a pit pricey ... but at least its licensed.
