Yes, you'd expect to find a decent selection of burgers at a joint called Burger Bar. And probably gourmet-ish burgers of the bespoke kind, considering the place is owned by the same person who owned Rice Bar in the space before it. Indeed, Brock Shepherd’s retooling of his Kensington Market noshing spot shows that something quite different is happening here. With rice firmly out of the way, Shepherd (former owner of The Chelsea Room, Azul, and, yes, a former martiniboys.com scribe) has rebranded his Rice Bar space, temporarily shelving the bespoke rice bowl offerings (more on that later) - and the derivative sandwich division (the affixed Wich?) - and jumping onto the suddenly hip gourmet burger shop bandwagon.
For those who frequented the space in its earlier incarnation, Burger Bar, which opens at today at noon, comes with a few surprises. Shepherd’s well-edited menu offers up not rice, but quintessentially Canadian burger fare, with entries like the organic Alberta-raised Wagyu burger and home-crafted veggie burger (this is Kensington Market, after all) plus – yes, this too – poutine. More specifically, Saag poutine (Indian Paneer cheese and spinach gravy) and Toronto Island fries (homemade chili)!
But, digging deeper into the menu uncovers more interesting options, like Eggs Beni (the jewel of the brunch menu), baked brioche, meatball sliders, and cheeseburger spring rolls. There's will also be a focus on cocktails (Shepherd is a competition-tested mixologist), with options like The Sour (made with vodka, gin, rum, bourbon, pisco, cachaca, sake, or sogu) and a collection of bourbons and craft microbrews.
Shepherd has whipped the space into something of a humble UK burger-and-beer urban saloon — content, comfortable, devoid of pretence. The room - populated with happy yet harried staffers ("More coffee?") and loyal hungry locals who breathe in the sizzle of Cowpoke Burgers on the grill – sports a solid wooden bar, with a dozen tables dotting the room. Cardboard trophy moose heads are mounted on the walls, while Edison light bulbs hang throughout the room. All this makes a cuddly little eatery that transports us back in time, but sticks closely to the Kensington market ethos. It is the anti-McDonald's, the anti-Burger King.
As for Rice Bar, Shepherd promises us it will reopen in a sized down location elsewhere in Kensington. Now where's my burger?

Takeout no more!
Fries were so skimpy in box there was even bare spaces at the bottom of the box.
Just all packaging and no food…..keep your #&^$* packaging.

WHO ARE 'MARKET FOLK"
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "MARKET FOLK" ONLY SKINNY JEANS PEOPLE WHO HANG OUT IN THE MARKET FOR 3 HOURS A WEEK AT THE EMBASSY OR RONNIE'S OR WHATEVER.
TO "TERYY" - WHAT FAILED BUSINESSES? AZUL? HE SHUT IT AND MOVED ON. RICE BAR? HE SHUT IT TO TRY SOMETHING NEW. YOU LIVE IN THE MARKET? NOBODY CARES.
THERE IS VERY LITTLE TO KENSINGTON MKT. DEAD AFTER 6 PM EVERY NIGHT WITH METAL SHUTTERS ON EVERYTHING, DEAD ALL DAY ON WEEKDAYS. JUST BECAUSE YOU BUY 4 BANANAS AND A LIME EVERY WEEK DOES NOT A NEIGHBOURHOOD MAKE. HOW MANY PLACES DO WE NEED THAT SELL ARMY BOOTS? HOW MANY REGGAE TRINKET STORES DO WE NEED? HOW ABOUT 4 NATURAL FOOD STORES THAT HAVE EXACTLY THE SAME PRODUCTS.
CHRIST YOU PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS

Simply put, the burgers are not good. Our patties were all overcooked, and I felt they tasted rather bland. The buns were too chewy, making it impossible to actually take a bite without the insides popping out of the bun. Extra toppings are overpriced at $1.50 each, and execution is hit or miss - cold red peppers on a burger, hello?
Also, the "focus on cocktails" did not seem to exist when I was there. Having heard about the great mixologist behind the bar, I ordered an Old Fashioned off the placemat. The waitress did not seem to understand that someone might want to order one of the classic drinks as printed, implying that it was just the owner trying to be clever with the retro look of the placemats. I was then told that the bartender was unable to make the drink because they didn't have all of the ingredients yet. Third, I was offered the drinks menu from the Rice Bar. In the end I decided to pass on having Sake with my burger...

Burgers were dry and overcooked but the beer was cold.

While the atmosphere is wonderful, we found the staff to be rude. The food was very good, but again, the staff was unnaccomodating and unfriendly. And the poor service was consistent. They seemed "bothered" and "put out" to actually have to serve us. So unfortunate, as the view is beautiful and the food is tasty. This seems like something that could be easily fixed? Each time I have dined at this restaurant, I have had the same experience."

I agree. None of Brock's places failed - he just moves on the next wave. I'll miss Rice Bar, though.

Strange comments, how's the food?? What make his other businesses a failure to you?
The burgers we had were good and tasted of BEEF, solid fries and onion rings. Local draught beers.
Sounds good to me. Rice Bar is to reopen in the spring, so the sign says.
Try it before you slam it.

The burgers were very good. The braised Wagyu was outstanding, while the veggie burgers we had were served was dry. The decor was exceptional. Overall, it was a good time and we'll go again.

Unexceptional food. Polite waitstaff, but hard to attract their attention. Lunch menu a limited staff. More suited to late brunch or something. Really enjoyed the burger, but....
18. George Jenkins's Review :: October 15, 2009 George Jenkins's Rating: 2 Stars |
So disappointed. The last thing we need in the market is a burger joint... yech... rice bar was great the way it was. I really don't think market-dwelling folk are going to take to this idea very well. My friends and I are definitely going to steer clear.

Burger Bar is original enough - what do you want, another Starbucks? Another DIY beer bar?... or grilled cheese sandwiches? Check it out before you thumbs down the place.

I agee with Terry If Rice Bar was a success why change? Also why jump on the burger bandwagon of places like w burger? I am also disappointed that we are nolonger getting origal places in the hood.

I am a long time fan of Rice Bar. I don't agree with Terry's post - all Brock's spots have been successes. Nothing wrong with change.

Completely unoriginal there is a place on college called w burger bar this must be a knock-off of it.
23. Tom's Review :: October 13, 2009 Tom's Rating: Stars |
I can't belive that this guy who has had so many failed businesses now thinks burgers are the way to go ... why can't people open something original for once. Also as someone who lives in the market I don't want see place that sells beef most of us are looking for healthier food rather than greasy burgers!
