It's late Thursday night and the room is packed at Blowfish, the nearly-unmarked King West restaurant that has set the tone for the area's self-conscious commercialism. Cruising club cougars sip $9.50 Nishibi Martinis while a downtown crowd in the dining room, their faces aglow in the active lighting, picks over portions of seared octopus and architectural towers of Albacore tuna.
The Blowfish Restaurant, the latest entry to open in Toronto's booming King West area, suits the neighbourhood nicely. Flashy on the inside, painfully nondescript on the outside - an out-of-towner could walk down trendy King West and be completely unaware of anything remotely hip going down within those buildings.
Sushi restaurants are more popular than ever right now. This has been great for the bottom line at all of the best local sushi and sashimi spots, but it has led to a new sort of problem: all too often, these restaurants are greeting their crowds with slapdash creations that are more about clearing the sushi chef's ticket window than creating art. Blowfish, however, remains utterly dedicated to creativity and artfulness, as expressed through fish (yep).
The menu features gourmet tapas style dishes like Beef Tataki (in a spicy ponzu sauce) and black cod (in miso marinade). We started with an appetizer of Caprese-style Tofu Salad ($7), garnished with slices of tangy tomatoes, onion, and black olive. The crab spring roll ($10) features tender, snow crab and summer vegetables all wrapped up in a tidy rice paper.
Entrées range from the most delicate sashimi to heartier comfort food. In the latter category is a luscious Peking duck breast, so tender the meat pulls free at the fork's first suggestion. In the former group is a vast array listed on a menu of its own: Hamachi (yellowtail), Sake (salmon) and Ebi (Tiger Shrimp).

It is literally a small mountain of sushi toppling over the heavenly goodness. I have never been able to find a sushi place that has wowed me, and this one does the trick every time. Their sushi pieces are flavorful and hefty in the greatest way possible, so the money you spend is worth every penny. My friend's roommate introduced Blowfish to him, then my friend introduced it to me, and everyone that I've introduced the restaurant to now says it is one of their favorites.

Would like to share my experiene. Had dinner there last friday night, the positives were that the food was good and i feel the prices were reasonable, however our server (burnette girl) seemed to be annoyed from the moment she approached our table. Had somewhat of an attitude all night. After reading simular reviews it seems as though the management should do something about the unhappy staff.

For sushi, the food is way overrated for the price. Spicy Tuna rolls tasted like canned sushi with mayo and abit of hot sauce. Spent $400 for 3 for food and wine that had a value of about $100. Service by a pushy and impolite young lady made the experience memorable in the most bad way. Will never go back.

Overpriced with mediocre service.

Terrific sushi, large pieces, and the killer drinks are always a hit with first-time visitors. (Note, the disco music can be a little loud and off-sets the serene atmosphere of the decor-but that's a small complaint.)

Our previous experience with the food was excellent, but this time is was a far cry from last time. The sushi was a mess, and the dessert roll thing was sent back as it was old, and "hard". They have been much better, and they need to get back to where they were.

I had just come back from living in San Francisco where so many sushi restaurants were hard to beat! I have to say that this one can really compete with those in the Bay Area. Beautiful decor and atmosphere. Perfect for a night out on the town and worth the money. It's a great experience. Will go back soon!

My husband and I are from the Big Apple and our favourite restaurant is Nobel, we were very hesitant to try a japanese restaurant in Toronto as we were sure we would be let down in comparison. We went anyway with recommendations from our hotel and we were honestly amazed. Our server christa was such a big help, she recommended our entire meal explained in detail every ingredient and we fell in love with each bite. The martinis were as good as dessert. We went on a Saturday night and the house was packed but our server and the hostess still managed to hunt down directions for us to a rare art exhibit we wanted to see during the Toronto art festival. We very much look forward to returning to Toronto and reliving the experience that we had.

Haven't been here for the food but last summer I have been out on the patio for drinks. It's a fabulous outdoor space with a decor that tricks you into thinking you're in Miami! The martini's are overpriced of course, but completely delicious. Looking forward to the patio opening this year.

Had dinner at Blowfish on Friday nite with 3 friends. I have never had such bad service at a restaurant - which is surprising as I have lived overseas for many years. I really can not describe to you how bad the service was. After making dinner reservations 2 weeks in advance we were placed beside the door - which was a poor location as the rude wait staff constantly pumped into my friend who had the unfortunate corner seat. In addition, to the cold draft that permeated our table everytime the door opened, we asked our waiter if we could please move to the open tables at a more attractive location - by the wall. After being told we could not move, that the tables were being held for 2 parties of 2 - we ordered our food. To our chagrin, we noticed the tables being put together for a group of 4 and long behold, the manager doing shooters with the group. Needless to say, we were unhappy that we were lied to - that they were saving it for their buddies. The reason I am sending you this review is that the staff were rude, indifferent and totally lied to our faces. What a shame that none of us will go back again, and we will tell all our friends not to go there unless they want to be treated poorly. The meal itself was delicious.

This my favorite place in Toronto. The staff is great, the martini's are awesome (yes, expensive but awesome) and so is the food (love the kobe beef sashimi and spicy tuna rolls! Hot oil hamatchi is a must try!)...this is a great place for a nice night out!
