Warning: This place is not for vegetarians. Black Hoof is, however, a carnivore’s dream. A bastion of the old-school. Kind of romantic, for a certain kind of eater.

“There are places like this all over the world, but strangely not in Toronto,” says one of the owners, Jen Agg, “where you can go and eat cured meat and great cheese.” Agg is the former co-owner of Cobalt, the now-defunct College Street bar; she handles the drinks. Black Hoof’s other owner, charcutier Grant Van Gameren, has put in time at such illustrious joints as Amuse Bouche, Lucien, and Canoe.

Set up in Cocktail Molotov’s old space, on the north side of Trinity-Bellwoods Park, the small bar-like charcuterie restaurant does not have a lot of space – the tiny kitchen is cramped behind the bar – and is mostly done up in chocolate brown wood, with chocolate brown wallpaper in the back. There’s a large mirror over the bar, scrawled over in sharpie, detailing the cocktail menu. Add some leather chairs and the place could be a modern take on a smoke lounge.

While charcuterie can be eaten with your hands, and is, of course, something of a small plate, it’s not the same as tapas. The point of tapas is that it’s little tastings of different flavours, and while there are certainly a variety of flavours here, the way you consume tapas and the way you consume charcuterie is very different. With tapas, one has the freedom to jump from flavour to flavour willy-nilly; Van Gameren arranges the meats from mellow to intense, so that you can work your way up, and the sharp flavours don’t threaten to overwhelm the subtlety of the mellower meats.

There’s no charcuterie menu; you just ask for a plate and Van Gameren will give you what he is featuring that night. The meat comes laid out on a cheese board so long it looks like a flat cricket bat. I try a mellow, dense foie gras with just the right amount of salt topping it; a triangle of pheasant rillette with dried cranberries and tarragon; and to finish, a small, dark slice of pork liver salami, sharp and full. Watching Agg try the rillette, Van Gameren gets an anxious look in his eye, wondering if it is too dry. Despite our protests that it is fantastic, Van Gameren concludes that he had to throw out the whole batch.

1st time around I ordered almost everything on the menu. A lot of love goes into the food at the Black Hoof and you can taste it. I love the kitchen they work out of and the staff is great. Lavender Mojito was too good.
Second time around I was able to try the horse tartare and it was fantastique. Sweetbreads = bomb, and Duck confit sandwich will be ordered again...and again. Thanks Black Hoof! Great job!
Any bad reviews I think stem from eating with bad company or eating with a bad mood/attitude. If your out to taste with tongue and not attitude, you will love the Hoof.

horse sandwich? more like horse shit! it was SO DISGUSTING! and the staff!!! whoever it was behind the bar made us feel like idiots about our drink choices!!! like? this place is a total joke! and then after making the worst manhattan we've ever tasted she made us this drink with rose water that was over the top and not even drinkable! oh my god what a mess. the food took forever, the place obviously has an ego it doesnt deserve.

Went with a larger group (around 8 ppl altogether) so we went when they just opened to guarantee a spot. Was surprised at how small it was, but it also meant we never had to wait long to order.

Luckily, my entire table loves meat, so it was a fun day, ordering at least one of each item on the menu, and then some more. My friends and family were impressed. Quite a few repeat orders. Drinks were delicious. Would go again if I wasn't so lazy and it didn't seem to far.... Very small plates however, was kind of hoping for slightly larger portions. Probably would be a more enjoyable experience for 2-4 people dining together instead of 8, but we still had a good time!

I am vegetarian and was just checking this review to see if the Black Hoof is vegetarian friendly. My boyfriend has been talking about going here since they opened, but sadly we can't go together since there seems to be nothing for us veggie's.

Though I will probably never get the chance to eat here (unless I stop being a vegetarian), I just wanted to throw in that this way of eating meat (using all parts of the animal) is probably one of the most eco-friendly. Less wasteful, it seems, and probably full of nutrients. If you do not agree with eating horse meat, then don't eat it! Simple as that! Sheesh.

Well, all you vegetarians can keep on whining, boo hoo that poor horse/cow/pig etc... dosen't faze me at all at least i dont have to sit beside you. I eat meat and i love it. I grew up on a farm and am used to untraditional cuts of meat and i must must say the black hoof does satisfy those carnal urges from my childhood. Bone marrow... yum, the charcuterie is wicked good, the only problem i have is my girl is a recent convert to all things delicious (aka veggie) so i have to eat alone. Black Hoof ? well done ! the world need more place like this. keep up the good work

We wentto Toronto's Black Hoof last night with couple of friends. We had the charcuterie platter, the duck confit and the pork belly pastrami. For dessert we had the lemon tart - the lavender give it a nice flavour. Everything was well done - but very expensive. The service was great (and it was a packed Friday night); every dish was explained to us and we also got help with the wine list.

Regarding horse slaughter...yes. Many horses are still alive when they are mutilated. The captivebolt used by many slaughter houses is designed for cattle. Not a longer necked animal that is swinging is head around trying to escape.
Second, this seems to be USA's dirty little secret....no one inspects these horses, attend an auction sometime and see what you are eating. I was a Standardbred trainer...my horses had everything from fly spray, to Lasix, hormones, steroids and not to mention one of the topicals we use is Furazone/Furacin which explicitedly warns to use gloves when applying because it is a carcinogen to humans. All of the products carry heavy warnings notforuse in animals intended for slaughter. Then there are pleasure horses, they use fly sprays and weall use deworming medicine. When horses go to auction, they are usually heavily sedated and have had alot of Bute to get themthru the ring.
Greed is motivating horse slaughter. People arepaying top dollar for horse meat and no one, including the USDA is going to interfere.
There is a cute little saying that the killbuyers here love to chant..."from stable to table in 7 days". Egads, that is not enough time for an aspirin to leave the body letalone steroids. We use Celestone which is a liquid powder and dissolves slowlyover a period of three months.
    Bon Apetite!

I will give you 4 stars as your foods are outstanding. However, I feel it is wrong to use horse meat for 2 reasons.

One, because a horse is a companion animal- like a dog to many people.
And two, all the drugs and products used to worm horses and treat horses, have warnings on the labels that the products are NOT to be used on any livestock for humans to eat.
I realize your country slaughters horses and sells the meat overseas...however things like steriods, wormers, Bute and all the many other drugs commenly used on horses are dangerous to people.

So your resterant should really not feed horses to people.

112 is probably the most hyped restaurant in Toronto. Its got sort of a NY Village feel and the food is quite good. I've been there three times and its interesting how the mood changes as the night wears on: crowd gets a little older and boozier later.

Anyway, I'm starting to sense them becoming spoiled by their own success. I've never found any of the staff to be particularly friendly, but now they seem like they don't really care: like we have so many people waiting to get in if you're not happy just get out of the way. Place just doesn't feel relaxing to me. I'm sure I'll go back, but maybe on some off night when its less of a zoo.

I took my boyfriend to Black Hoof tonight for his birthday. The food...the atmosphere...the service were ALL excellent. Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly. The food was fresh and flavorful. The place is small but cozy.
We will definitely be going back again in the near future. One thing though...it is best to get there when it first open. In a matter of minutes, the restaurant was half full.

Black Hoof - my new favourite! For someone who's only wish in the world, besides world peace and all the other selfless things we're "suppose" to wish for, is to be able to eat foie gras for breakfast lunch and dinner and not have it affect my health or physique in any way shape or form - labelling it as my recent favourite is hardly inappropriate. How can anyone resist foie gras with BACON JAM – not to mention the assortment of house made chacouterie. It is truly a revival of the peasant. My immigrant grandmother, to this day, makes her own sopresata, sausage and an assortment of other preserves; olives, red peppers, eggplant, peaches. And I remember hearing stories of how my mother, uncles and aunts were all teased at school because of their bag lunches, of course including crusty bread & roasted red pepper sandwiches. No Bologna or PB & J for this family. How the tables have turned. The Black Hoof, representing a long awaited celebration.

Is this really the appropriate forum for a discussion about animal rights and vegetarianism?

Take it outside Patricia. Don't you have some leaflets to distribute or lab rats to set free somewhere?

    21. Annonymous's Review :: March 31, 2009

This is what Patricia is talking about:

"A horse slaughter plant in Saskatchewan is being investigated by a group set up to make sure horses are being treated humanely.
The Canadian Horse Defence Coalition recently received an anonymous video of operations inside the Natural Valley Farms slaughter plant near Neudorf, just east of Regina.
They say the tape shows about 30% of the horses being killed while still awake, and also shows the animals slipping, sliding, and bucking up in fright in the killing pen."

    23. Tim Slow Down's Review :: March 28, 2009
Tim Slow Down's Rating: 3 Stars
Disgusting.....romantic...to eat meat from a horse that is butchered alive? Stunned enough to quickly hang it upside down by a back leg and slit it's throat to bleed to death while it watches someone hack it apart fully conscious. Yes, that is so trendy, so romantic, to eat the flesh of a sentient animal. What next cat? How about dog? How about human flesh? Why not? Meateaters don't care what they eat, right? Just as long as it bleeds.

Great young chef. Unfortunately he has a teamed up with a horrible young partner.

Starting with the good. The food is outstanding with flavours that are sure to please the palate and at a very reasonable price. If you appreciate a great charcuterie plate you will love it here. If your like me though and you want it all, then you just might be sadly disappointed. Disappointed by the fact that the chef has certainly done his part, the hard part, but the easy part, comparitively, the front of the house has totally missed the mark. This place has all the makings for a great hole in the wall restaurant with a hip atmosphere but comes up way short. My disappointment lies in two areas. One is with the wine list. Horrible. Absolutley horrible. No consideration has been given to how to match the wines with the flavourful and delicate foods carefully served. Why, because there is no understanding of this concept. I see this all too often in restaurants in Toronto. Young wine buyers with inexperienced palates buying only wines that they like. Oh well.
The service, not bad, cool but efficient, unless you have the unfortunate experience of having to deal with the front of house partner. Wow. She is definateely in the wrong business! Clearly she has no concept of hospitality. I was embarrassed at the way she spoke to one of the people in our party. My message to her is we patronise you so don't partronise us. People frequent your restaurant because your partner is talented not you!
And while I'm at it I might as well ad this. I work hard for my money as many of us do, and I like to go out for dinner and when we do we usually spend a lot of money. A Thank You On the way out would be appreciative. The only thing you or your staff were thankful for was that we gave up the table.

I classify myself as a 'meatetarian', however there are dishes I will not eat due to the inherent cruelty in it's production... one such dish if foie gras, the other horse meat. I will never set foot in this restaurant as long as those dishes are on the menu. Diners, educate yourselves on the foie gras and horse meat industries in Canada.

Anyone who claims that the food is "mediocre" obviously has no pallet whatsoever and no understanding or appreciation of the skill and craft that goes into making the wonderful charcuterie. I have been many times and always experienced fantastic food and prompt, friendly, knowledgeable service.

Those of you who don't "get it", go to Burger King/KFC/McDonalds...it's clearly more up your alley.

    Alfred,
That still doesn't come anywhere close to justifying a 2.5 hour wait.
Some of my favorite restaurants in the city don't seat many more than Black Hoof, but they manage to do several seatings a night because they're well managed.
Black Hoof needs to stop patting itself on the back for riding a trend and make up its mind whether it's a bar or restaurant because right now, it's trying to do both with terrible results.

    31. Garth Breaks's Review :: February 20, 2009
    Garth Breaks's Rating: 1 Stars
    Garth,
I've been to the Black Hoof and seen the seating arrangements, have you considered the possibility that the table you were meant to replace stayed for an hour longer than expected drinking and chatting away, as groups do after a good meal? Were this the case, the staff would have no real way of guessing how long the table would take. If you were a party of two able to take any of the various tables, I would be completely sympathetic to your arguments, but under the circumstances, I would say that they are completely unfounded and rather blown out of proportion.
Thank you and have a great day!

    Jason,
It wasn't an issue of price range, it was the fact that we were made to wait over two and a half hours for a table which never came, all the while being told "one would be ready shortly". While waiting, we ordered food that certainly did not warrant such a wait, nor the price charged.

    Way over-hyped.
Food was mediocre, nothing particularly exciting or unique.
Washrooms were filthy, dining area wasn't terribly neat or clean.
Most of all though, the service spoiled the whole experience. Since when is it appropriate to dish out attitude with dinner?
I was with a party of 4 that was made to wait over 2 hours for a table that never came. Our expectations were mis-managed from the get-go as we were told time and time again that a table would be "coming up shortly".
We spent a small fortune on mediocre cocktails, bread, olives and meat. None of it was the least bit extraordinary and when we left we were all starving.
The owner Jen appears to still be stuck in her Cobalt days and believes an establishment can survive simply because it's cool & trendy.
Cobalt died soon after the martini trend did, I can't help but wonder what will happen to Black Hoof when the current popularity of charcuterie ends.

The only upside to the night was discovering The Burger Shoppe on Ossington and the fact that their kitchen is open 'til 11. Great service, great atmosphere and decent burgers (at least when you and three friends are irate and starving).
