  • Black Bull Hotel & Tavern

The Black Bull Tavern has a lot in common with those biker bars you see in beer commercials, but without the sugarcoated top-40 soundtrack.

Bad day at the office? Been dressed down, looked over, or (gulp) laid off? Better to slink off someplace dark and quiet to lick your wounds. Someplace dreary like the Black Bull, where they’ll either understand you, ignore you, or both.

Sure, it's dark inside and a little rustic and intimidating, but soon enough you realize that no beer company is going to do business in a place where yuppies get scared.

Essentially, it blends small-town bar (wooden tables, booths, open grill) with biker bar -- think “Alice” meets “Easy Rider”. Weather permitting, take advantage of the ample outdoor seating. This back-hoe number offers the best patio in town. But this isn't the American Express Platinum Card Crowd. The patio seats 175 exhibitionists.

As for the guys, baseball caps on backward rate dangerously high here as a fashion item. Pool tables. Idle banter and Molson X flow freely through this kickback place. More Peel Region than Queen Street W., the bar ís a mix of Club kids, Queen Street artists, weekend urbanites and off-duty bikers. Friday and Saturday sees live entertainment. The menu consists of burgers, grilled chicken, salads, nachos and roast beef. – B.J.

If there was a 0 star rating or below that I would give it to this bar. I was there recently and the Ogar at the main bar inside was really rude to me without cause. He repeatidly turned his back on me when I was trying to order a drink and continued to chat with his friends on the other side and at one point stated that he didn't care what I wanted his lips were all chapped as he he had smoked too much crack and he was udderly mean to me. The atmosphere is filled with tension as people seam to be trying to hard to be "cool" and are slowly becoming the "yuppies" they are rebelling against. I would not recommend the bar to anyone unless you are into being disrespected and ignored.

This place has a nice patio, but if you sit on the perimeter beware of homeless people standing over you. The server was rude and they asked us to leave as soon as we paid the bill - even though some of us were still eating.

Well when you walk in to a bar dead sober and they won't serve you for no reason at all. This bar is not a place for people who wear long sleeved shirts and any style at all. If you wanna drink at this place put on your cut off jean shorts and tank top and have a blast.

Here's the thing, you can't really be "done" with the The Bull. It holds its own, a brilliant ting in T.O., where there are many "real scene" patios. And yes, the passer-by traffic is brilliant and the pints are relatively cheap. But the attitudes of the people that fill the seats are sometimes out of control - they get close to, and sometimes do, ruin the great patio space.. Patio on, Captain!
