tepping into Big Mama’s Boy is like throwing on a wool sweater in the middle of a snowstorm. Yes, I may have ventured there in the middle of a February blizzard but for delicious food, friendly service and cozy ambiance, it was well worth the trek and I don’t doubt my opinion would be any different had its warm fireplace not defrosted the frosty tips of my fingers. Enter Big Mama’s and the smell of freshly baked pies (as in pizza pie) and its deliciously pungent garlic engulfs you as you are seated by mama herself (Heather Mackenzie). Our party of 6 seemed large in the small space but we were quickly accommodated.
A converted century home, the main floor houses a intimate dining area and the resto’s kitchen where all its culinary magic unfolds. Upstairs waits a more casual lounge area famous for its intimate concerts and lesbian dance parties.
It is not uncommon to find couples discussing Proust over a bottle of Shiraz or gazing longingly into each other’s eyes – the cozy space definitely feels lived but this is a characteristic that only adds to the restaurant’s rustic charm. Big Mama’s offers something different from the swish eateries popping up all over the city – this place has real class and I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet.
Mama’s menu is littered with Italian delicacies with many vegetarian and vegan options available. The place also boasts a number of wheat-free crusts and most of the meat and vegetables are locally sourced and organic. Collaborations include the Cabbagetown (Garlic, Basil, Grilled Zucchini, Hot Italian Sausage, Roasted Red Peppers & Bermuda Onions), The Canadian Beaver (Pepperoni, Mushrooms, Spanish Onions, Bacon, Double Cheese) and the The Mightie Flutie (Goat Cheese, Bermuda Onions, Hot Peppers, Basil, Marinated Tomatoes, Sauteed Ground Beef, Chili Chipotle, Calamata Olives). There are also a number of wheat-free desserts and an ample wine list means you’ll find anything to compliment your dinner. Take off your jacket, warm yourself by the fire and plan on staying for while.
