ver the years Bier Markt has become a fixture on the Esplanade, a premier Toronto institution for Beer lovers and foodies alike. Obviously, this wasn't enough for the team behind the uber-successful Belgian bistro. With its opening last week on King Street West, Bier Markt has established itself as more than a bar or restaurant, but as a brand. With two locations in prime Toronto areas, it isn't hard to imagine further expansion in the future. It won't be long before Bier Markt owns our hospitals and universities.
On a recent visit to the new King West Beer Markt the entire long outside patio was completely filled with King West lunch-breakers and afternoon drinkers. It's obvious that the full service patio, the biggest boulevard patio on King West, will be prime culinary real estate (at least as long as the weather cooperates). For greedy warm-weather diners and voyeuristic people watchers, it will be a home away from home.
The interior is an ideal location in and of itself, even if it’s a victim of summertime neglect. The compact bar and dining space formerly housed the Amsterdam Brewery Pub. Under the reign of veteran Quebec-based designer Margaret Rudi the space will continue serving quality beer to paying customers. Many features of the 100 year old building have been maintained, including its ceiling timbers and natural stone walls. Added to this have been about 15 tables, a small corner stage and a giant wrap-around bar. It's only fitting that the most striking feature of the Bier Markt is its bar.
The space is considerably smaller than the Esplanade Bier Markt but owner Robert Medal sees this as a beneficial rather than detrimental. Where the Esplanade location is more focused on drinking (and rightfully so) the King West space will be more intimate and dining-oriented. The traditional Belgian-inspired Bier Markt menu has been maintained, but a new breakfast menu has been added by King West chef Ryan Gallagher (formerly of the Four Seasons).
For those unfamiliar with the menu, you should be very ashamed of yourselves. The menu is Belgian-inspired (although not Belgian per se) with items like Steak Frites (made with Amish Aberdeen Angus Beef), Moule Pots, and Pan-Seared Barramundi. European recipes are routinely amalgamated with every known form of beer-based preparation. In addition, the bistro hosts four culinary festivals a year: a fondue festival, a White Asparagus festival, a Wild Game Festival, and of course, Oktoberfest. Every Friday there is a unique "Chef's Cut", a typically unusual choice of meat. Think Elk Chops, Cornish Hen, or Wild Boar. Bet you don't get that at your run-of-the-mill watering hole, do ya?

19 Reader Reviews | Cool place... good food, and good beer. HORRIBLE service!! You practically have to jump on the servers to get their attention. I sat on the patio once for 30 minutes before getting served (and that was because I had to request a server).

Fantastic! This restaurant deserves 6 out of 5 stars!
Great friendly servers that actually smile and at least seem to be sincerely happy to work there, and they know all about what they'r serving you...unlike a few of the neighboring restaurants; real food, the first of which I've truely enjoyed since returning from living in France for 3 years, and it's all paired with beer and wine right on the menu, very cool touch!; Beer, I mean real BEER! Not Coors Light or BUD, but real, properly crafted and seemingly exotic (to the bland TO market) European and other international beers. The interior is a perfectly cozy stylish space with great energy. Gorg bar too! Haven't been there past 10pm, but I hear it becomes quite the party too.
I say it's a fantatic concept and I'm surprized there isn't a line-up 7 days a week, because each and every part of my experience from the service to the food to the beer (I even finished with a lovely glass of wine) was exceptional...at least compared to the other area resto's I've been hitting for the last 6 months. The Bier Market has now become my regular haunt, and I can't see anyone out-doing these Belgian's any time soon. Bravo!

I had my 30th birthday at the Bier Market last night.I had over 35 people throughout the night and it is not a big place so you would think they would do their best to make us happy. I started having problems before we arrived when I was comfirming reservations and was told I had to sign a contract. When we got there they had not set up enough place settings. Then the operations manager was extremely rude. When it came time to pay. He was bringing things up that i was never told. I have never heard at any bar/resturant that a bill (if not paid all by cash) had to be on one credit card. They should be doing all they can to accomodate that many people. I would never go back there. YOur 30th birthday should flow and be enjoyable. We were supposed to stay there all night and after dinner we all went somewhere else because there was no way we were giving that bar anymore money. With that many people not one of us will go back and everyone that we know we will ensure will never return. That is a bad taste to putin someone's mouth when you are a new bar on that strip.

I live just a few blocks from Bier Market King West, and I've been a few times lately.
The fact is,Bier Market King West is nothing special. In fact, other than the killer patio, it's really just another pub.

This website only seems to attract the negative comments of restaurants, allow me to entertain you with a positive comment. I had recently had dinner at the Bier Markt for their Oktoberfest Menu. From making the reservation to receiving my check I must say I had a wonderful experience. The host was very pleasant and our server was knowledgeable and made several beer paring suggestions in regards to my choice of entree, Ontario Wild Boer. During my meal the manager (David) approached my table and started a polite conversation on the Oktoberfest Menu and explained other dishes and beer paring that we might enjoy. Overall a great time experience and would suggest to anyone who would like to escape the ordinary spa menu.
Remember this website can be used for good as well.

Amazing food and great selection of drinks - however the hostess was so rude!
One visit, we asked if we could sit on a visibly busy patio - there were at least three empty (albeit dirty) tables in sight. We were informed it would take "at least 20 minutes" to clear the tables; ergo, we would have to wait and stare at the empty tables! not a good start...

The draw is obviously the patio but the food isn't bad either. As bars-with-a-view go, this one isn't a bad value but it is about twice as expensive as it's area counterparts.

Have been there three times for drinks only. The band was great. Good looking 30+ crowd. I really liked the place except for the rude reception we get at the door every time. My friend's and I are in our late 30s and we get asked for ID and questioned if we've been drinking at other bars. Where do they get these guys from? The doormen have no customer service skills. It almost makes me not want to go back.

This spot is really cool with all of there separated area, and their outdoor seating on the side street (that's where I ate). I came with a huge party and everyone's dishes came out great. Service was good. Give it a shot, it's fun.

I wasn't impressed with the speed, ambiance, or the food.
but I didn't hate it.
The only thing separating this place from the average pub is a killer patio. yeah, you can hear King Street passersby... or shall I say they can see you!

Yikes - didn't make it past the hostess one lunch... Left for another resto in the neighborhood - and won't be back.
She seemed sweet enough, and was likely hired for her - ahem - assets. Bad enough that she was clueless about the menu but then couldn't tell me if the resto does take out, and then she criticized the pricing of the salads. Not a good sign that the staff is dis'ing the resto to clients.
Some advice for Toronto restaurant owners - why not hire staff who actually want to create a warm welcome atmosphere, take some initiative, and have some judgment.
- rant over -

I expected better. But, admittedly, we went on its first day. So, we'll certainly try it again.

Is there anything lower than a 1? Phone service was terrible when trying to make a simple reservation --put on hold at both locations while trying to make simple reservations -- at the Esplanade location twice in the span of 30 seconds...Website phone numbers are incorrect but no one seemed to care. Had to give simple instructions of "6 people for noon" at least three times. Is it any wonder the restaurant turnover in this city is out of control?

A venue to get buck-naked drunk rather than having a nice outing. Stick with the beer, the mixed drinks are nasty. Sanitation is an issue as well.

Overall, it was a memorable visit. There were definitely highs and lows throughout the meal but the pacing and progression of the meal was great in my opinion.
I would recommend the Bier Markt to people who are sick and tired of the commonplace brewpubs littering the city. And if you've never tried Bier Mrkt, this would be a good time to try it.
