Benihana, in the Fairmont Royal York Hotel is fine Japanese dining, albeit with traditional fare, which means arty tight rolls, rice swirls, and fish and flesh options. That said, if you're looking to lighten the mood and celebrate the big date without all the anxiety, Benihana is a great choice.
Practicing traditional Japanese Teppan style cooking, Benihana's chefs prepare your food right in front of you on a grill built into your table, and these chefs are unabashed show-offs, taking every opportunity to juggle knives, flip food, and entertain customers. But it's not all for show; the Japanese fare measures against most other spots in the city. Consider the $70 five course Teppan Dinner, including everything from a sushi appetizer to a creatively made teriyaki dinner. It worked for Steve Carell so why can't it work for you?
