Like fellow restaurateurs born, raised and flourishing in Toronto, Richard Parrot knows the city melting pot and its denizens inside out from years of experience. Bar Wellington is close to the hipster heart, capturing the low-end spirit of a high-end area.

Bar Wellington has positioned itself in the hipster leagues; a pumping little venue fueled by the area’s activity, tinged with elements of coffee house idealism.

“This is a very cool neighbourhood,” said Parrot, matter-of-factly, referring to his new surroundings at the corner of Wellington and Portland. “This spot is already a magnet for the advertising types in the area. And we’re finding that these people are, in fact, the Bedford customers all over again - just older now, out of school and with paying jobs.”

From the outside, Bar Wellington looks fairly similar to the other buildings on that particular stretch of Wellington. However, within the unassuming edifice is one of the area’s coziest confines. Among other things, the atmosphere throughout the three-floor bar is surprisingly eclectic; the classic interior drawing from the turn-of-the-century structure, which may sound heavy but translates well, with raw wood tables, framed posters and pressed tin ceilings.

Bar Wellington serves up pizza, burgers and a full breakfast line-up to a very hip, down-to-earth bunch, the early evening crowd is very Industry, since the area is ad agency megopolis, with a trickling of the fashionistas who saunters by.

When this restaurant first opened it had promise. They had some initial issues with food quality but they seriously became a great overall spot to hang out and enjoy the city life. To be honest, i've stopped going there all together because the food is HORRIBLE and the place is FILTHY. Yikes! Have they had a change of ownership or does the owner/manager just not care?

This has got to be the worst experience we have ever had while visiting Toronto. The food was terrible and had hair in the potatoes the servant denied the fact that it was served that way and made us feel unwanted, and the manager or owner did not have the courtesy to come to our table to discuss matters. The health department must have missed this one somehow.

I have noticed there hasn't been a review here for awhile. All I can say is that this is our local of choice now. 2007 seems to have sorted out any problems in the kitchen that might have been around before. Service remains excellent. Very friendly servers but not in an annoying way. Great atmosphere both inside and out. I have introduced many friends to this place now and all love it.

I have been a fan of the Bedford Ballroom since it opened and was very sad when the the last call was called. The staff that carried on over to the "Welly" are excellent at understanding people's needs and it has a great local feel if that is what you are after. No loud music, just good food and great service, if you deserve it!!

Overall, an excellent experience. We live in the area and go there with friends all the time. Staff are always friendly and the music is great. The food was a bit off in the summer but they have a new menu and the food is 100% better. Highly recommended!

The food has been consistently TERRIBLE each time we have been here (wrong orders, burned burgers, overly well done steaks, and dark dark brown french fries that taste burned) and although we still go back for an occasional drink either on the way home from somewhere else or on our way out somewhere else, we will not order any food here again - and no evenings spent here with friends. It's really too bad because we live in the neighbourhood and were looking forward to having a new local.

service rocks!! Who ever says the fingers aren't good. Well, get your head out of your ass!
The servers are awesome! The draft selecion great!
The only negative is the flaming gay guy who is loud and so flambouant you want to slap him. It's okay though, the severs very quickly make him go away!! Then they all roll their eyes. It is actually very funny to time and place bets on how long it takes. HaHa

    Great place, check it out

I don't know what some people are talking about???????? Yes, the food could have been better but the service was awesome. I am sure that these are the nicest people on earth!!!!!!!!!! Super accomadating, friendly, helpful and down right honest. I asked the server her opinion on the fingers and she said" no, have the meatloaf you will LOVE it. She emphasized love , so I had it and don't disagree. It was the best I've ever had.

For all you dog lovers the owner hands out treats. It is simply the best and most adorible place in the neighbourhood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow - I'm not sure if this place has gone terribly downhill since the Martini Boys crew were there, but my recent visit was my worst restaurant experience in years. I had been told not to go by friends who had had a similar experience, but other friends seem to think the burgers (ok) and good patio (v. good) made up for the other deficiencies.

The burgers were indeed passable, but the chicken strips were inedible (chicken strips!??!?). The fries were clearly pre done and put back in the deep fryer for reheating.

As for the service... well, it was downright funny. 3 of the 4 orders came wrong, we never got cutlery or water, and the few things we did get (vinegar, etc) only came after multiple requests. The server and the owner were arguing at the bar, and our bill ended coming before we finished the food, and I think the waiter was actually walking off the job.

We live in the area, but won't be back for love or money...

Now has its liquor licence and it's good to go. Two nice patios on a quiet street - perfect for laid-back drinks on summer evenings, or as a meeting spot before heading to the clubs. They need to sort out the food a bit better - reasonable pricing, but just not that tasty - but the service is excellent and the management friendly.

Food and service here is consistently exceptional. Imaginative dishes are served up with fresh greens and delectable sauces at a reasonable $. Atmosphere is hip but always friendly and inviting. Nice surprise in a low-key spot.
