  • Bar One

At Queen and Shaw, directly across from the Candy Factory, people crowd into an understated Italian restaurant. The sleek space is Bar One and each evening it's SRO with well-heeled drinkers.

This crowd tends toward model-worshippers and Eurotrash. A scenester zoo at night, few realize this cool lounge serves first-class brunches seven days a week. Loud and crowded, it's quintessential candy factory life.

This is not a big place: four banquettes, five or six tables, and one very long, two-sided bar that is right out of Wallpaper*. Owner Marcello Barone’s family hails from Bar Italia and the now defunct Ellipsis. You'll immediately recognize the recurring theme at Bar One. This is a minimalist, goldfish bowl place, complete with one of the sexiest exhibitionist, restaurant-length bars around. Tables lined up against one wall like dominos, facing the long, sleek bar, often filled with sharp-looking black-clad locals.

Chris Cruz (Ellipsis) is in the kitchen serving up linguine gorgonzola & sugar snap peas; grilled chicken salad on arugula with toasted pinenuts, shaved Asiago and fennel julienne with lemon rosemary dressing; antipasti; and a nice take on the tuna steak sandwich. Many of these dishes share a kind of elemental richness, which seems to work better in small doses. On some of the more elaborate dinner entrees you can sense the chef furrowing a brow, grasping for combinations that will make a big splash.

Bar One remains a great place for gourmet pizza and cocktails, but don't go too hungry as the menu is limited. Have the Bagna Cauda salad to start, and stick to one of the thin-crusted pizzas with hot Italian sausage, onion and blue cheese; other items are a bit inconsistent. Nonetheless, the place is a hopping scene.

I met up with a couple friends at Bar One on Saturday afternoon for brunch. They had already eaten and were onto cocktail hour. I however, after having a very late Friday night on the town showed up with a Starbucks latte, I had purchased on my way over. Our waiter comes over and tells me the owner doesn't want to see my latte in his restaurant. I asked for a plain coffee mug to pour it into. He came back and said no. I even offer to pay for the cup as I didn't want to waste what I had already bought. Again he asked the owner but came back and said no. So he took it and poured it out. I being slightly pissed off, sat there and only drank water and had an egg and peameal bacon sandwich. (which was pretty good) But given the stupidity of the owner, there's no way I'd ever go back.

We can't say enough about the funky atomsphere......and by the way the food was fantastic! Top this off with some great atmosphere and you've got yourself a meal.

We had the experience or feeling rushed out after ordering dinner on a busy night. thanks for your money now leave was the impression we got. the food was mediocre at best and the service could be called "too hip for you". the person who seated us, who as i have come to find out is the owner, is rude beyond belief. cool location is why they have made it this far!

No matter what time you go there, you will always encounter a friendly staff eager to wait on you. The food is good, but their strong point, I have to say, is that pizza. I am not a pizza lover, but I have to admit they serve the best gourmet pizza in town. I should know, my spouse has taken me to almost all the pizza places in this town and this is the only pizza I will eat. No matter what topping you choose, you will always get good thin crust pizza and everything I've ordered there is ALWAYS fresh. They are open late, so if you get the "munchies" at 11 o'clock, head there. The west-enders won?t hurt you.

This is an extremely hot restaurant - the timing could not have been better. The food presentation was fun - which was perfectly complemented by the outstanding (and unique) flavor. Possibly the best restaurant on Queen West.

Working across the street at the mental health centre, i often need to wind down and get out of my work mode. Bar One is my safe haven because i know i can rely on them for attentive service and excellent menu. Their pastas are traditional fares with a twist. Try their carbonara with pancetta--simple, rustic, delicious. Their version of aglio e olio is stellar--just enough garlic taste that won't deter some smooching after your meal. A great minimalist restaurant that fits my urban lifestyle!
