Bar Italia, College Street's favourite neighbourhood spot does updated Italian food with simplicity. The long room, closely set tables and open kitchen make diners feel like lucky co-conspirators here. If the noise level reaches a bit of a din, or the dark-wood banquettes feel less than cushy, buttery walls and glowing hatbox-shaped fixtures cast it all in the dim light of a great bistro - as does friendly, unobtrusive service.

Torontonians and in-the-know late-nighters have all done time here, sampling simple, fresh and elegant favourites, perfectly prepared. Commendable restraint characterizes an ethereally fluffy little Gruyere omelet (sweetly presented with one orange cherry tomato for punctuation). A spicy tomatillo sauce complements a row of flawlessly grilled prawns. A meal of small plates is near divine. Entrees, like impeccable seared scallops with creamy squash and spinach risotto, or roasted free-range chicken that would make Julia Child proud, are highly recommended. - A.J.

Before i went i was told the food was ok but i wanted to check it out for myself with some friends. The sandwich i ordered was bland and minimal and not worth the money. When i complained the gentleman told me he was the owner. i noticed right away he couldn't look me in the eye and yes he replaced the sandwich with a pasta dish that tasted like cardboard. I couldn't finish and let the owner know i wasn't going to pay for it and swear he uttered a racist remark beginning with the letter "n" when he turned away. My friends all caught it and we all left. How blatently rude!

The service started out as being HORRIBLE! Our reservations were at 10:30pm, but we arrived early at 10pm. The hostess, without saying hello, immediately barked at us that we would need to order all of our food at once b/c the kitchen was closing soon--mind you they didn't close until 11pm! We should've walked out right then, but heard really good things about the food & didn't want to find somewhere else to eat so late.

My first visit to Bar Italia, on Valentine's Day, was without any expectations. I was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness of the staff as well as the quality of the offerings. However, I was sorely put off by one thing - I may be mistaken, and I hope I am - racism. I am a visible minority, and so was my girlfriend which I took, hoping for a good romantic time. It took us a bit to notice that we were seated in a corner of the restaurant, where ALL the visible minority happened to be grouped together. I tried to pass it off as coincidence, but the presence of bias became more evident as more non-whites arrived and were seated in the far corner, near the kitchen. The more comfortable sofa seats were, without exception, reserved for whites. While I cannot say for certain whether the said whites were Italians or not, it seemed unfair to me that we, while paying the same money for the service, were to be treated differently. The service, while friendly and "non-intrusive" as Martiniboys described, often did not arrive promptly; I had to wait quite a while for a glass of water. I sincerely hope that I am mistaken about this; however, if it were to happen again next time I visit Bar Italia, I would definitely rate this restaurant 0 stars.

Amazing night and great place to hang out. I went with a small group Sat. night to Bar Italia and we all loved the place. Food taste good and music was nice to listen too. People working there were very friendly. Even the owner (I think his name was Joe Bonavota) chatted with us and we thought that was so nice of him concidering it was very busy. Our group say's go to BAR ITALIA!!!

Bar-Italia is Little Italy. Just recently we had an engagement party there, and the staff there were great. We had amazing food and wine . Our guests were impressed and loved every part of the night. We did not wait long for anything. I know our guest were saying later that they want to come back again with other friends for a gathering at Bar Italia again.

Great great and better then great. I've been looking for a place to take my family and friends for a gathering and picked Bar Italia. Food, drinks, staff and location was all perfect. We had one little party of people that were alittle noisy close to us but I guess they were just having fun. Loved it and would jump at going again.

Little Italy is so lucky to have Bar-Italia there. Just recently we decided to hold our Birthday party there, Owner Joe Bonavota and his stall treated us like gold. They customized a prix fixed menu. They gave us many surprises that evening. Once we arrived we were quickly escorted up to our private floor, equiped with our very own bar & wait staff. Our guests were definitely impressed. We enjoyed every minute of the evening. If you ever want to celebrate a wedding anniversaries or birthday party go to see Joe Bonavota and his staff at Bar Italia you will love it.

    1 Very close to a 2.
Living on College i have made my trip through little Italy many times, always walking by the Bar Italia, and finally i ventured inside. The customers looked like they were enjoying themselves, creating an initial pleasant atmosphere. However, it took a while for a staff member to even look at me let alone show me to a seat. I was very hungry, but had trouble finding something on this sterile and basic menu that i wanted to order. The best part about Bar Italia is that they have every bottle of wine on their list by the glass, and just so happened to have many bottles that i liked. The food came, and tasted about as good as it looked in the menu. The cafeteria style seating was a pain. Long story short, this place is a 1 star, but the Minestrone soup was a 2.

For those of us who tire of the restaurant of the week (those fleeting trends like Butt'r, Bruyea Bros) that charge a fortune for a nice decor and mediocre food). It's time to give the old staple of Bar Italia another shot. Good, reliable and affordable food in the heart of little Italy.... what a concept! Relaxed but
trendy atmosphere, good selection of wines (the house is fine by me) and affordable pastas ($12) can be the perfect start to taking college street by storm. And you'll still have enough cash in your pocket for a stop at Wild Indigo for a coffee martini (delicious and the best transition from dinner to dancing in the city) before heading on to Revival...or wait a second maybe we've moved on to the newly opened MOD shop... Have fun!

Bar-Italia has to be by far the most "hospitable" place in all of Little Italy. Just recently we decided to hold our engagement party there, we had our first date almost five years ago at Bar-Italia. From the get go the staff & owner Eugene were amazing.
They customized a prix fixed menu with our names & our engagement party date right on the menu, one of the many surprises they gave to us that evening. Once we arrived we were quickly escorted up to our private floor, equiped with our very own bar & wait staff. Needless to say, our guests were definitely impressed....And so were we. The food was excellent, no long waiting periods from the time of ordering. Everyones food came right on time & dug right in. I have to say I give Bar-Italia not four but ten stars for their event planning, food & service. We plan to celebrate our wedding anniversaries there every year.
