I kn ow what you’re all thinking: big surprise, another upscale burger joint popping up to jump on the recession- friendly ground beef bandwagon. But guess what poor readers; you are all wrong. Bamburger might not be the first of its kind in the city, but the man behind the Bam is a fancy burger pioneer. So put your false judgements away; Bamburger is here to stay.
With a whimper, not a bang, Bamburger opened its doors last week (May 13) in the former Mirabelle space. Seemingly appearing out of nowhere, the new little burger spot actually has already experienced a complicated history. Owner Jody Ortved claims he was “naïve enough to think [he] was going to find a location quickly.” But he ended up searching for a space for his spot for two and a half years. Real estate bureaucracies, as complicated as any in a Kafka novel, prevented him from finding a location, despite his rich history in the restaurant biz (he was a partner in the famous Toby’s chain). Ortved knew he wanted to put his family- friendly, upscale burger eatery in the Yonge and Eglinton area (where he was born and raised) and would not settle for any other location. Taking a grass-roots approach, he even went so far as to put notes on the doors of businesses until finally in February he heard poor Mirabelle was shuttered and the spot was his for the taking.
Three months later and bam, Bamburger, whose menu and design had been in place since Ortved decided he wanted to open, was ready to serve. Though in the two year period of lag between the Toronto restaurant’s conception and its opening, froufrou burger joints have become as rampant as mosquitoes in Manitoba, Ortved is not concerned about the future of his business. He says: “I’ve been to Craftburger, Burger Shoppe, and Gourmet Burger and none of them compare.”
Bamburger is upscale without being elitist; equipped with high chairs, its demographic aims to please anyone from a 6 month old baby to a 91 year old grandparent to a group of college students out for burgers and beer. The 58 seat restaurant, designed by Peter Cotton, boasts exposed brick, deep crimson and ebon booths, pine paneling and soft lamplight, pretty good for a burger joint.
As for the menu, burgers, of course, are the focus. Pork, turkey and soy based veggie burgers are all up for grabs. For an additional cost, Bamburger offers a bevy of condiments, including, avocado, caramelized onions, white cheddar, Swiss emmenthal, creamy horseradish, chipotle mayonnaise and many more. If you’re not in the burger kind of mood, bite into the king of sandwiches, the clubhouse. Or if you’re too pansy, you could always dive into one of the salad choices that are all big enough even for Seinfeld’s Elaine Bennis. But no matter what kind of mood you’re in, the sweet potato fries and banana pudding (that took five different recipes to perfect) are absolute must-haves.

We went to Bam on Friday Feb 12 for lunch. The place was busy, so we waited for 35 min to get our burgers, mine was just mediocre overdone burger with previously frozen tomato on it.
Coffee was brought first!!! so I had to drink it cold after my meal.
They used to be better when they first opened.
I do not think I'll be going there again anytime soon.

We agree with Ben....Bamburger makes a great burger! Enjoyed every bite.
3. James's Review :: December 29, 2009 James's Rating: 4 Stars |
A disappointment through and through. I don't quite understand how one can make a hamburger absolutely inedible but Bamburger figured out how to do that with flying colors! Food in general has always been on the low side of average for me there, and the staff wasn't exactly the most attentive. I like the atmosphere, and that will bring me back - just not going to be my first choice at any point.

My friend recommended this place for me since I was around the glington area, I just went to this place last night and I was amazed at the service, I was so shocked that I had to find somewhere to post my review about it!
I loved the warmth from the waitresses and the quality of the food as well as the fast service..The burgers were delicious! I might consider going back there again before I head home.

Best veggie burger in the city and believe me I have tried them all.
Add goat cheese, avocado,peppers and garlic mayonnaise and you are in for a treat!!
The place is welcoming and so is the staff.
Cant wait to get back there, I feel a Bamburger craving starting.

Awesome!!
Bamburger with maple bacon and cheese sauce along with homemade fries,
best burger I have had in a very long time.
Friendly service to top it off.

Fun place to go with your friends, lots of great burger varieties.
Prices were decent and burgers were huge, just don't expect "great"!!
Service is mediocre..
Overall, fun place to check out, casual feel, good place to go with friends, but food is just not bad.

Let's be real guys--burgers are the bomb, and Bam Burger has got it goin' on! I dream of a double-double animal style often, especially with some special sauce. Now I'm drooling.

I went to Bamburger with friends. They were keen to go after hearing so much about the place. I don't particularily like burgers so I wasnt as excited. Big mistake on my part....I loved the bamburger with all the topping choices and I ate every homemade fry on my plate.
We had no room for dessert but were able to finish the mini combo dessert platter without much difficulty.Cozy decor and friendly servers
We will be heading back as soon as we can!

After hearing a lot about this place, my friends and I finally went.
So glad we did!!! The burgers are fantastic. The homemade fries with chipotle mayonaisse are delicious and addictive. The wait staff friendly and attentive.
Congratulations Bamburger. You have done it right!!

This place is seriously a continuous disappointment.
The food sucks! It sucks sucks sucks. It's so inconsistent. The burgers are ok at best. But the last three times I've tried to do takeout, they've totally messed up. The cook likes to do everything well done regardless of how you ask.. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on you still dammit seriously I just want a good burger!
16. Craig Raine's Review :: June 29, 2009 Craig Raine's Rating: 1 Stars |
Juicy juicy burgers. No, seriously. Ask for extra napkins, especially if you add the greens or roasted peppers. Follow up with fries. Good saturated fat good times!
17. Trish Henderson's Review :: June 26, 2009 Trish Henderson's Rating: 4 Stars |
I love their service. The people that take your order are great. The folks cooking inside are incredible nice, despite the clouds of delicious aromas and the heat inside. It's also a happy stomach humming the sweetest, most urgent songs. "Feed me, feed me Skillet!" Well trained, my precious one.
Okay... a bit much. But they do make a great burger.

I tried Bamburger this past weekend. I was pleased with how great the burgers tasted. I like the area and I think this area needed a burger place like this one. There is a burger place opening up the street North of Eglinton. Competition! Maybe you guys should lower your prices to attract lots of people. Do a burger special for the summer. Take this suggestion and you will see your biz boooom!!

The interior of this place is so outdated it makes me feel like my grandfather going for a burger.

I wanted to love this place. I was disappointed. We went here for burgers on Friday. We had a variety of items. The service was good (brings them up to 3 stars from 2) Overall though, I thought it was overpriced, overhyped, & kind of average.
22. Brad Ferguson's Review :: June 14, 2009 Brad Ferguson's Rating: 3 Stars |
I have been 3 times. Not sure what I like better, the bamburger with maple bacon and cheese or the pork burger with grilled pineapple. Very welcoming staff with a cozy atmosphere. This area needed Bamburger!
23. William's Review :: June 13, 2009 William's Rating: 4 Stars |
Really quite cute. I read about it here, and I've been driving by on a daily basis. So I tried it out, take-out actually. Quite good. A bit on the over-done side, but very quality burgers.

25. Phillip's Review :: June 09, 2009 Phillip's Rating: 4 Stars |
Yes their burger is of high quality and cooked the right length of time. I've been here a couple of times and the burgers taste very good but I just don't think they have much in terms of creativity. Its safe - but a bit pricey.

YUMMMMMMMM! Delicious, juicy, cooked to perfection, great atmosphere, friendly service. Great to see a few small touches from Toby's on the menu for a nostalgic like me!
Go before the line-ups start!
31. Janet's Review :: May 25, 2009 Janet's Rating: 4 Stars |
The Bam burger was really good. It was a good size (not humongous but pretty big) and left me feeling good. The bacon wasn't crispy though. The fries are a must. You could just look at them and tell that they're not greased out. Overall, a good deal and definitely worth going out of your way for.

The Toby's spots sustained me through my college years, as it really hit the spot when the dining halls weren't cutting it. Almost everything was good and cheal, especially the burgers. Toby Burger, no mayo, with cheese and a Sobe. $7.79. Bam. I shall try the new Bamburger today - odd spot, but looking forward to it.
