t the perimeter of the Roncesvalles stretch, B appeals to the thirty-something self-employed crowd. Conspicuously open after breakfast and closed before dinner, the luring of folks who work when they want to is readily apparent. The furnishings are mostly recycled—either given or found—and pages of Silver Surfer and X-Men are slipped beneath the glass tabletops for your reading pleasure. Head chef Robert Bechard, former sou to Jamie Kennedy, cooks up fresh, locally purchased ingredients with finesse. Imagine a plate of French toast stuffed with berries and brie drizzled with real maple syrup, or a light and fluffy slice of carrot cake that practically melts in your mouth. Mmmm. |

The quality of the food here is a cut above the rest of my breakfast favourites, and I think under-priced compared to many other popular breakfast/brunch joints around the Dundas/Roncesvalles neighbourhood. I think they struggle with the same seating issues that all small places experience during busy brunch hours on the weekend, but I've always enjoyed my breakfast enough to make the wait more than worth it. I've ordered (and enjoyed) the French Toast, the eggs B(enedict) with salmon, the basic breakfast, and the fruit and granola, and am amazed by the amount of beautifully cut fruit, and obviously high-quality ingredients and attention that go into each meal. When I asked for more yogurt than they usually include in the yogurt and granola, they were happy to oblige. I too brought guests from out of town (who have high food expectations) for Saturday Brunch, and though we had to sit in a long line at the window tables to eat right away rather than altogether at a table, my guests were delighted with their meals. We are lucky in the neighbourhood to have with lots of nice brunch places, but my fav is B's.

I’m finding that one of the difficult things to watch as gentrification occurs in a neighborhood is that attitude and prices tend to go up, while quality and customer service tend to diminish, which I find has been occurring in Roncesvalles over the past few years. I went to B a little while ago and had a decent time and a decent brunch from a decent waiter. I decided to return with a friend a second time, and was surprised by the attitude of the host who was both cryptic about B’s apparent seating rules and dismissive. Certainly not worth the wait or the money. I would recommend Butler’s Café, Alternative grounds, Mitzi’s and Tinto’s for those who want good food, fair prices, and above all, friendly service without the attitude.
