ith its Greek scene etched in the glass door and white stucco walls decorated with a map and located in the middle of the Greektown strip near Chester, Avli doesn't look much different than the area's other restaurants. Inside, old and young couples half-fill the dining room.
The house specialty is the homemade main-course pies. We try the seafood feta tomato pie ($13.95) consisting of scallops, shrimp, snapper and mussels still in their shells, baked in a slightly spicy tomato and feta sauce and encased in a flaky short pastry infused with olive oil. It's the standout dish.
If you're very hungry, belly up to the specialty plates. Served with Greek salad, Greek fries, pita, and tzatziki, the mostly meat-based dishes are large and hearty, but someone’s leaning heavy on the oil and salt.
Aside from the appetizers, the food was either over cooked or under cooked and there was a very small selection of food choices. The atmosphere had nice warm and dark colours but the lights were set way too high. I was unimpressed. - A.J.

2 Reader Reviews | I can understand how some might find the atmosphere here at best daunting. However, after having sampled a great Greek Meal, whatever this place lacks in ambiance it more than makes up for with probably the best food in the Danforth. In one word, "Great!" I also keep seeing the word "unpretentious" associated with Avli, of which I concur whole heartedly.

After living in the danforth area for 30 years i've tasted just about all the offerings from most of the restaurants on the strip and Avli has become a new favourite of my wife and I. We find the food more traditional, and unique than usual. If you want basic souvlaki you can go anywhere. Try the lamb shank, it's perfectly tender, or virtually any fish special. The wine list is moderatly priced and has some great greek varieties to try. We love it, and recommend it all the time.
