vant Goût is the place where Rosedale goes not to be seen. Humble and private, it is tucked away amongst furniture storefronts on Yonge Street.
Upon stepping inside Avant Goût's new location, an immediate feeling of warmth and modest luxury overwhelms. Classy and simple oak paneling lines juxtaposed ochre and white brick. The walls are decorated with original art, as well as black and white photos of city life, illuminated from below.
Management approaches to take your coat as soon as you step through the dark, draping curtains that separate the doorway from the cozy dining room. The matching oak tables, organized cafeteria style, provide seating for thirty, closely and comfortably, while the open concept kitchen peaks furtively from behind the bar, inviting guests to watch the chefs create. Dining at Avant Goût is intimate and private; even when seated by the Yonge Street-facing front windows, you feel like you are at a friend's home.
Coinciding with the move, owner and chef, Kamal Hami has tweaked and revived Avant Goût's mostly-French menu, arming it with a selection of adventurous new dishes. The entrées sport a creative flare while the appetizers supply slight twists on traditional offerings. The mussel appetizer, prepared in a red leek chili broth, is strongly recommended. Cooked to perfection, the unexpected fusion of red leeks, chili broth and an array of spices melts in your mouth. For an interesting entrée, try the pistachio-crusted tilapia, seared and topped with a zesty lemony sauce. The duck breast, covered in a red pomegranate bilberry sauce, is innovative and enjoyable to any palette that dares try it. Favourites amongst regulars include the calamari appetizer and Moroccan lamb shanks entrée which are both consistently good. Also noteworthy are the pasta dishes (the menu boasts homemade noodles) and the always surprising daily specials. For dessert, the freshly-made Crème Brûlée is a must-have. For libation, wine lovers and souse hounds will find delight in Avant Goût’s extensive and selective list.

Took my date here on valentine's day. Food was very enjoyable, service was friendly, and I'm recommending this place to my friends. You can't go wrong here, a sure-fire bet for any occasion.

I have been quite a few times over the past couple of years or so and it has remained a consistant source for gastronomic delight! Kamal, chef/owner, continually impresses with his varied menu and flavours combined. The grilled Calamari is a must on every visit. The regular menu (incredible as it is) is always supported by delectable evening specials. It's just the kind of place though that you only tell your best friends about, as it's tiny, cozy atmosphere fills in quickly and I'd hate to be turned away!

This was the first time that I have been to Avant gout. So, I cannot judge what it used to be like as bothing in common. However, I can say that my dinner was a nice surprise. The food was excellent and attention by the by server were perfect.

The food and service are as excellent as they were on my first visit here shortly after the restaurant opened, and I have returned about four or five times and continue to be greatly impressed. The Moroccan lamb stew was a particular standout. The service was erratic, but attentive and professional.
