 llen's is like Alice's Restaurant, but with an Eire-heavy menu (did you know that potatoes originated in Peru?) and Uilleann pipes instead of hippies and cinematic offspring (okay, it's nothing like Alice's). An atypical Irish pub (though still snake free), Allen's boasts a casual and subtly refined tablecloth air, instead of the usual shamrock proliferation and pictures of Joyce. On the airy back patio you can keep company with the much-loved willow tree (get its mind off 700 years of English oppression and it will stop weeping). Live music and reliably inspired fare have made Allen's a beloved neighbourhood destination. - S.T. |

I've been to Allen's many times. Nothing very dramatic has ever happened to me there, except perhaps a minor case of the hiccups after getting a little tipsy. Decent food, albeit hardly spectacular (though their burgers are damn fine). Good beer, good service. Lovely patio. Great little local that is a step up from a pub.

This place is disgusting. We were five minutes late for a 7 p.m. reservation and they gave our table away. We sat in the worst seat possible, and the waiter managed to shatter six wine glasses on our heads. Shards of glass went everywhere -- in our meals, drinks and a piece flew into my friends mouth and cut his lip. We had to ask to move and ask to have our meals replaced. They acted like they were doing us a huge favour. We thought we would have the meals compensated, but they refused. We had to barter with the co-owner to have one round of drinks compensated. Did I mention it took us 1 hour to get our replacement meals? Not only that, I stepped in broken glass on the way out that was never cleaned up. Save yourself the effort and do not eat here!

- They physically pushed me toward the door at Allens! Have you been there?
- I want to tell you our experience; it was crazy!
- I arrived Wed. June 27/07 before 7pm, i had 12 friends coming, we were looking forward to their patio!
- Once inside, i was heading to the back near the patio and asked a server if i just seat myself. she said no, go to the front so i did.
- At the front was this older woman who was short, curt and mean! I noticed a friend was at the bar waiting and she noticed their bad attitude-they meanly said she had to sit at the bar and wait.
- So the older women was saying we can't go to the patio unless we're eating dinner. I said yes some will be eating dinner, there's 12 of us and we're having drinks.
- She said we had to wait inside until all 12 people came, then we could go to the patio.
- I said how about a table for 2, there's 2 of us now. So she was walking us to the patio and i said it's mean here. (sunday, i was there at noon wanting to go on the patio for drinks and they were mean about it and said no, it's for lunch only)
- So we're at the dooor to the patio and this older woman stopped in front of me, put her hand on my lower back and was pushing me saying to get out. I said what is going on? We have 12 people here and we'd just like to sit on your patio. She was actually pushing me to make me move. I noticed it and said stop pushing me. I said where is the owner and she said she was, 'this is my house and get out'.
- honestly i couldn't believe it, we did not provoke her. hey i wanted to go there another time someday but i guess i won't.
- Allen's will not only be mean, tell you off but will physically push you out! nice.
