When it comes to nightlife, most brew pubs are a junk drawer of kitsch that, save for a few quality beer-centric ones, provide hours of amusement as empty as the calories in a pint of Hoegaarden.

So, it was with a bizarre sense of optimism that a few of us trekked up to the quietest of the lot, The Abbot on the Hill. And as it turns out, the Abbot turns is precisely the sort of bar that other chicklet-pubs should aspire to be: it's clean, fun and even a little disruptive at times. What choice did we have but to stick around and spend the night shot-gunning beers?

The Abbot is a shimmer of oak and cherry wood curves that wrap the narrow two-level seating and exhibition grazing area like sandwich spread. With AOTH’s brewing hardware on display behind the bar, the motif plays off the brewpub theme, with a cottage-like décor.

Open Bay windows line the front, looking onto a Yonge Street forest full of post-work passersbyes. On the second floor, there are tables for dining with a view of said street. Not a great view, but if you want to eat - go upstairs; it's quiet and conversation is audible. For drinking purposes, it’s best to stay downstairs and blend with the gadflies with the open ties and work clothes.

With impressive brews and smart service, AOTH succeeds in making a scene: not an über-scene, but a Summerhill-type scene. Like a Brit pub should do, The Abbot is a hub of social interaction. At cocktail hour, this place vibrates with energy, becoming so noisy that one patron told me, and she said it unaware of any irony, "I feel like I'm at one of those downtown bars."

Last Monday evening, my backpack (my LIFE - thankfully, minus my laptop!!) was stolen from the Abbot as my party and I were just about to leave. (Yes, it was a Monday, after a lower school PD session, and it was only 9 p.m.)

Aside from cancelling and/or replacing my cards, keys, and other belongings, the most disappointing thing about the whole situation has been Adam's (the owner) response to the crime which occurred on his premises (or I should say, lack thereof). His promise to check the security tapes of the store next door went unfulfilled - as, in his words, by the time he asked them for it, several days later, it was too late and the tape had been recorded over, and, let's face it, apologies only go so far when unaccompanied by any form of action...even a free drink would've been something (after all, I've bought a few $10 glasses of wine there in the past)! Needless to say, I found it very unfortunate that the regular patronage by a few once faithful customers (beginning as soon as they opened their doors!) from the school down the road did not warrant something...anything... more.

    What an excellent little find.
I had a work associate bring me there for a bite and few drinks.
We enjoyed the Buffalo Shrimp, Artichoke Dip and Smoked Salmon with a couple of pints of beer.
The food was outstanding. I was particularly impressed with the flavor and texture of the perfectly prepared shrimp. I had a chance to meet the owners, Adam & Melissa, and was greeted with their warmth and hospitality. They gave me a felling that I could have some in for crackers and water and would have been provided with the same courtesy and attention.
As it was mid afternoon and a bit slow I also had chance to speak with our waitress Leane while my friend was taking a phone call. She seems to be cut from the same cloth as the owners and completed the whole service experience ensemble.
If you are in the area and have not checked it out do yourself a favor.
This find will be on my to-do list again.
