Awful bouncers!
After waiting in line for an hour I got kicked out for allegedly having a faded ID. I was there a week ago and got in no problem only it was Saturday this time and they were trying to make some extra cash I guess. When I protested, they tried to physically push me away which I wouldn't have happened as they started to claim I was too drunk to go in. Obviously trying to start a fight.
I don't mind it inside, but the bouncers are *****

Friends and I arrived at the club at 10:20, asked for the guest list line and was told there was only one line and we did not mind as the line was moving.
get to the front and was asked for ID, we all produced Ontario DL and we were asked to step out of the line because we are be refused admission. Asked why and the bouncers would not give a reason. I was truly blown away...
The shits were looking for a hand out to let us in. We refused and walked out to Brant house.
Is there any governance for our "Entertainment District"?

This place does not deserve a star at all. I got a roughed by the bouncers and came home with a bloody lip. I am a woman and half the size of those bozos. I did not even struggle and they shook me. I lost a charm of my tiffany bracelet, a blackberry and the idiot bartender said that she didn't have my credit card. Well news flash, I sent the cops in and they had my Visa! Of all the places I've gone too, this is the worse place for service. The bouncers are power trippers with a lack of professionalism.
It wouldn't even compare with the level of staff at brant house, tattoo, or the drake.

HORRIBLE!
Bad music, expensive drinks, OVERCROWDED, TOO MUCH ATTITUDE!!
There were at least 4 FIGHTS there! The decor and layout is the worst that I've ever seen in a club. You would think with the expensive drink prices they would make the place look good and clean it up!
Upscale pricing for an outright DIVE OF A BAR
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

I was there last week, but I probably wouldn't go back anytime soon. I went up to the side of the entrance by mistake. A guy was trying to get his group in, the bouncer said, "ok, give me $100 for the group and I'll let you in". He gave the $100 and the group went in. Seriously, I've never seen bouncers being so brazen!
The regular entrance (even for the guest list) is through a parking lot. 4 days after the snowstorm, and it was still unplowed, wet and slippery, piles of snow everywhere.
My friends and I waited from 10:30 to just after 11 to get in. Only 15 people were ahead of us. About 50 people walked in from greasing the bouncer (side entrance) or from the guest list. Girls, if you're in a group another bouncer will pull you out of the lineup and let you in. If you're with guys, you're out of luck, you have to wait! I also saw some guys going in wearing white sneakers, which I know is forbidden (the only way to do it is bribe the side doorman and skip the lineup).
After waiting all that time, the club was less than half full when we got in... holding the lineup is a clever way to shake down the patrons.
Once inside, the bartenders were average, music was top 40ish but decent. Crowd was average 20's ish to 30's ish. Bachelorette/stag kind of a place. Average girls, lots of drinking, not hard to meet them. It filled up by 12.
Overall impression, get there early if you want an average night out. But getting in.. it's the type of place that gives all Toronto clubs a bad name to our visitors.

This place is a piece of shit. Used to go here quite often, and then the bouncers decided they were hot shit. HA! Don't think so. If you want to wait in line FOREVER to get in (I'm talking like an hour or even longer), then go. But, if you actually want to have a good time, don't go. The music? It's ok, a lot of Top 40, drunken good times type music. The crowd is either good lookin' or hideous, it luck of the draw. If you get a drink at the entrance bar, don't go to the tall skinny bitch with blonde hair - she's dumb as fuck. When we asked for 2 doubles, she charged us for 4 drinks, and then claimed she didn't remember doing it. Like I said, dumb as fuck or a real bitch. So like I said, this place is now a piece of shit. It's too bad, cause it used to be good fun.

OMG,I don't think they are even worthy of the 1 star in my opinion, they merit a zero.
I am never seen such a large group suffering from delusions of grandeur (security). Some of them are qualified to live in France,at least the pretentious french I know are not driven only by their egos but back it up with some intelligence.Don't expect anything from the staff at devil's unless you want to witness the highest level of imbecility.Maybe if that was the attraction I could graps the logic behind it.
Anyways If you want to deal with snobs and egomaniacs then you will fell right at home.

I can't belive that a head bouncer would ask me for money at the door to get in, what kind of place is this? I paid him off but it was not worth it at all, the music was lame and service was too slow, the club was not even packed for god sake.
Conclusion, the door staff at this club including the head doorman is a joke.
Never going back.

I am never going there again period.
I am still trying to get my refund from my new year's eve and if I don't I am cancelling the charges on my credit card.
Basically me and my friends bought some tickets for the 2008 bash but never set foot inside on the account that we never came with some receipts.Never mind that they mentioned or informed us of that policy when we picked up the tickets but instead we were left to ponder why in God's name were arguing with those loser bouncers. They could have easely verified that we had indeed purchaded their "VIP" passes.
In the end, frustated,I was determined to start my new year with a positive attitude and not to have it ruined by some insignificant people on a power trip namely the bouncers.
Finally when we decided to leave they had the audacity to ask for a 20 dollar bribe for each one of us.Keep in mind, we were already mad to have wasted the 35 dollars cover per person they were still trying to make spend more money.I hope some people in the management read the reviews and fire those incompetent morons.
I wish I could have expressed my thoughts personally but the bouncers are concealing their corrupt behavior and are not letting anyone see their bosses.
I hope the owner is unaware of the situation because he is been dragged slowly to the bottom.
Anyways thanks to our resourcefulness,I was able to enjoy my new year in another club and probably maybe with better company.
My advice to future patrons if you have a nice spot stay there if you don't have one find somewhere else to go DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME going at Devil's Martini trust me on this; even the devil would want to deal with that kind of bullshit.

I would hate to sound like a broken record here, but, yeeeeah, same experiences with this $hithole bar. Don't bother wasting you hard earned cash! It’s a problem with the ‘security’ and I quote it because I don’t want people to think all security staff as a power-tripped-out and thug’ed at these boys were. I’m a 30 year old professional and tend to conduct myself likewise. Be warned!

Being in my early 30's, me and my friends have little patience for long line-ups and the other nonsense that is notorious in the Toronto club scene. But Devil's was one of the few spots I still frequented because it is usually a fun spot and it caters to an "older" crowd. However, the experience I recently had turned me off this place and clubs in this city in general. As many reviewers have mentioned, the club holds the line and the bouncers ask for $20 to get in. This isn't new, but the last time I went, the bouncers held the regular line, even after midnight when there was nobody standing in the VIP line and there were many people leaving the club. Dozens of people had lost pattence and left at this point. I would have done the same if I didn't have friends waiting inside. At midnight, after waiting in line for over 1.5 hours and with only about 20 people left in line, these loser bouncers with no life outside of their Friday and Saturday night power trip were still holding the line. I asked one bouncer if the line would be moving anytime soon and he actually asked me for $20 a head to get in. I repeat: it was midnight and there was almost no one left in line at this point and most of the crowd was a 25 and over crowd with real careers and lives. There is no way I was going to give this A-hole my hard-earned pay when there are hundreds of other bars in the city. I left and will never return to this club. I love my home town, but it really needs to grow up. There is no reason why mature paying customers should be turned away when there are so many other options in town. These pretentious club owners and bouncers are just play acting. The nightlife in New York, Miami, London, Rome, etc is NOT like this. The emphasis is on having a good time.

I was a reg at this place at one point. I noticed devils becoming worse and worse. and everyone is right here. you have to pay the doormen.
I dont understand why make one wait in line only to an empty club. Where are the owners in all of this? if i were the owner, i would have every bouncer/security fired, even the bartenders as they have also been corrupted over the years.
The music is awful. I felt like i was in my apartment. How do you go from a solid house track, to bon jovi, then back to a decent beat...and then back to ac/dc.
Wait, i forgot to add, i would fire all the dj's at devils as well if i were the owner.
The main issue with this place is the bouncers. they are a$$holes. My last experience, i had gone to the washroom, it was pretty crowded, i came out of the stalls (the urinals had a waiting line), and i accidently bumped into someone. I apologized, and the guy i bumped into had no problem wat so ever with that. I was washing my hands, when one bouncers told me to come with him. WTF?! I continued to wash my hands, and again, finish what you are doing and come with me!!! wow ok, so i went with him, he led me up the stairs and to the right, and out the door. and then slammed the door behind me. He threw me out!? cause he thought i was drunk.
never will i go back there again. even the bartenders need greasing. if you want quality drinks. if you dont leave a good tip they will make sure you get waterdowned drinks next round.
hate this place.

We experienced the same racism that was mentioned in the other reviews. I went to the Devil's Martini with some work friends, all of different backgrounds. All of us were dressed well, no runners, jeans, hats etc and all of us were allowed in except my one black friend. The bouncers claimed that he had innappropriate shoes and would not let him in. The funny part was that my othter (non-black) friend had the exact same shoes in a different colour and they let him in. I confronted the bouncer about the situation and he politely told me that my friend was not getting in. I even tried to bribe him, but he wouldn't do it. He didn't give me a reason why he wouldn't let him in, but it was obvious. Needless to say, we all left shocked and disturbed.
I was born and raised in Toronto and I've never experienced this type of blatent racism. I've seen little things here and there and being brown I have experienced some things myself, but nothing this bad. I always thought Toronto was one of those cities that had tollerance for different races and cultures and now I'm not so sure. I would not recommend this club to anyone for that reason alone and to all you lawyers out there if there is a class action that you can take against this club, I think you would have enough support. DON'T go to Devils Martini - DON'T support racism.

This place is awesome, hidden away from the bright lights of the downtown club district the "USUAL" crowd generally doesn't visit devils martini for a few reasons:
1. If your the average clubber who doesn't plan ahead you don't go to devils. Why? You get downtown at 11am and by then Devil's is rammed. 9:30 is the best time to show up at Devils period.
2. The professional working class crowd going to the King West district are mostly fun loving Marketing guru's and sales rep's, no snooty and snobby youthful Toronto/Mississauga/Woodbridge kids in attendance.
3. Devil's holds true to the experience and attitude brought out by the crowd, somewhat addictive in relation to other Toronto nightlife, Females want to chat, guys want to smile and buy drinks.

I'm surprised to read the last two reviews about racist bouncers. Although Devil's not my most favourite place because I dont really like the set up of the dancefloor, I always found their doormen and bouncers to be quite courteous compared to some of the similar clubs. Ok, I'm not black, but I've gone to Devil's with my black friends (AND they were guys) and never had a problem getting in. And that's not to say I was with them, I've gone to devils with them on more than one occasion where we met up inside the club at different times and never heard of any problems. Perhaps it's just that ONE particular bouncer? Shmooze as far as I know is the most racist place ever because of this ONE bouncer, but he didnt represent the whole club. Club owners should really watch who they hire because one ignorant doorman can really ruin the business, just look at Shmooze now.

To support John and Craig's Review... I was also there that night, dressed in dress pants, dress shoes, and a very nice button up shirt, along with my friends.. It is true we were told we couldn't get in because we were black. I believe the only reason the bouncing staff came straight out and told our friend that it was because we were black, was because they didn't have any other excuse not to allow us in the club.. The message I got was that there is an "Image" or "Rep" that the club is trying to uphold and "Black People" will tarnish that Rep, yet it is ok for Devils Martini to play what society calls "Black Music" Ex. Reggae Music, and Hip Hop..(Kanye West, Jay-Z) This was the first time i've been exposed to such direct discrimination at a club and Devils Martini does not Respect individuals nor have the "Class" that most Toronto Night Spots have. I do not recommend anyone to go to this club, no matter what your skin colour is because on any given night it could be you who is discriminated against.

Devil's Martini is a racist club and I will never recommend it. As was mentioned earlier by Craig M, we were denied entrance into the club solely based on the color of our skin. There were no baggy clothes, nobody was smoking, nobody was talking loud. A buddy of ours who knew the bouncer was pulled to the side and was notified that because we were black we would not gain entry into the club. It astonishes me that in 2007 people are still being discriminated against due to the color or their skin. To add further disappointment, the head of security was black and when the situation was brought to his attention in a respectful manner he acted like he did not know what we were talking about. I would never recommend Devil's Martini and I hope others will see the light as well.

I recently attended The Devils Martini for my first time. It was a friends birthday and we all had such a good time. I can't wait to go back, the club was packed, the staff were all very friendly, and the drinks so very tasty. It is somewhat of a hidden location (back alley, New York kind of feel) but all in all a good night...
Also wanted to clarify on the last review that the smoking section was actually located outside, and was equipped with a few heaters...I wish there was one inside but I guess no such luck with the new smoking by-laws..

I recently went to Devils Martini and was denied entrance because I am Black. The door staff took my (who is Asian) to the side and told him that his friends would not get into the club because we were black. I have experienced this before at other clubs where they do not want to let you in cause of the color of your skin but never has been so forward. Yes there are black people in the club but they are friends of the staff. Never thought this would happen in Toronto in 2007.

The line up was a little crazy with no rhyme or reason as to when they were letting people in - 13 out, 2 in... The club was better than a lot of others in the city but it's still a club, with all the meat marketing, pushiness etc -it's not all that sophisticated. If you are a lounger and you've heard that Devil's Martini is an older mature crowd and you're contemplating giving it a try, it probably won't satisfy you. It's not worth the wait out in the cold. Go somewhere stylish and cozy and have a glass of happy instead.

Went to the Devils Martini for the first time on Saturday for a friends birthday and the bar seemed great until a friend of mine was too drunk and wanted to go home so I walked her out to a cab went to go back in and was told I could not. This would normally be ok but it was minus-25 out side and my jacket was inside. The guy at the door said it was not his problem, so now I have a cold and |Im out one winter coat. Ill I can say is I hope you give it to the homeless. Total lack of class on there part

Just wanted to leave a message and inform the internet with some proper feedback about DEVILS MARTINI.
Over 25 mature crowd, 2 levels, two dozen TVs, pool tables, large smoking section, plenty of parking outside (pay), ATM machine, huge bathrooms, 2 coat check areas, VIP sections..
Music is great, top 40, mainly Hip Hop, R&B, Dance, Trance.
Doormen are professional and friendly; security inside there is plenty of. There are never any fights or problems at this club. I have seen security walk intoxicated people to taxis just to make sure customers get home safe.
Bartenders are quick and courteous; they can mix every possible drink on the planet across 6 large bars.
Management staff are all veterans in the industry, professional and respectful.
Fridays are less busy the Saturdays. Place gets packed by 10pm. Call aheador email and get your name on the VIP list.
All in All one of the best establishments in the GTA region. Some of the most professional individuals in the industry.
You will not be disappointed.

Last week was my first time at devil’s and I had heard the place is impossible to get into after 10pm on a Saturday nights. When we got there, the rumors were true. The place was packed and it looked like we’d be heading home early. But I made my way over to one of the doormen, and explained the situation that I had 12 people with me which was a mix of guys and girls. We chatted for about 10 minutes, then to my surprise he turned to the taller doorman and said “let this group in”. When we got in the place was packed. The people were all having a good time and there was not attitude.
The funny thing is the only reason why I’m posting this message. Is because I overheard some people tell the doorman that if they let in our group they would post something negative on this website, so I wanted to defend the nice guys that let us in. So people, if you’re not a professional athlete or a rock star chances are if you get to a night club after 11pm you’re standing in line.

I just wanted to say, that I don’t know what all this negative attention is focusing around the bouncers, devils is my favorite bar in Toronto. The music is good, it’s always a friendly atmosphere, and there is plenty of the opposite sex. We travel with a few small groups that usually go to devils on a regular basis and the door staff has always treated us with respect. The first few times that we started going to Devils it could be somewhat difficult to get in (hence the popular club) but since we have become regulars they seem to open the doors as soon as they see us approaching. Love how were treated, it always starts our night off on a good note…..

I'm sure if you've read any reviews of this place you are aware of the issue with the door staff. I think they treat people like sh1t at the door so the people inside can feel a smug sense of superiority that they are part of 'the chosen people'. Good for them. My people have been chosen for reasons larger than the cut of my pants or the colour of my shirt. Their justification of keeping a 'mature crowd' is just that - but the fact remains that the real purpose of excluding individuals or hassling them is to create a sense of greater self worth once admittance is gained through the approval of authority figures (a.k.a. big guys in black T-shirts).

I went to Devils for Halloween night, saturday night, it was my birthday.
Music was amazing, costumes were even better, people were friendly.
One thing i just wanted to say was what is up with the rude staff up front, main doors???? I guess if they dont get their $30 under the table then we are not getting in!!
While they let everyone else in trough side metal gates because they are VIP (tipped $30) everyone else in regular line waits.
While our IDs were getting checked by security guy "Jerremy" he refused my GF because she didnt look like her picture, even though she provided him with 3 pcs of ID. But he said "FOR $30 I CAN LET YOU ALL IN" How rude! How unprofessional!
The only staff who helped me was two male security bouncers who called them selves "Roam Team", one actually escorted all females in our group to bathroom in basement due to one of them being sick.
All in all, music and people were great but when you are talked to like a 4 year old by these unprofessional bouncers it makes you never ever to go back!

It seems odd, all of the DM bashing going on here. We've never had any trouble from the door people. In fact they've all been efficient and hassle free. It seems we just whiz by once we're in the line up.
So I'm surprised by the rudeness people say they've experience. It's a great place to go if you don't feel like shelling out for a cover charge. The place is always packed and the crowd is well mixed which makes it comfortable and fun. The girls are friendly and the guys are polite, usually apologizing for bumping into you. Overall DM is a reliable place for a decent night out.

What's the point of going somewhere where they are not treating you right? I hope that someone in there takes charge of that business on a more intelligent note and stops hiring people who don't deserve to work at doors. How pathetic is it to come somewhere, spend your money, be nice to everyone and be treated bad? I cannot speak for racial profiling as I'm white but I will tell you that people working there are ignorant to everything and everybody. The complex of some sort is getting to those working at the door. I'm not sure is it the complex of not being as big as his colleague at the door or not doing weight lifting as enough as they want to, but I'll tell you that those working there should find a job where they don't deal with people. Who gives a right to them to insult and harrass without reason? I should actually ask them for some policy papers and see what it says in there as I'm very curious about some regulations. They cannot even accept constructive criticisms as I'm not sure they actually understand fully. It's even more pathetic if this is done every weekend and nothing is being done about that. I did hear that they are becoming worse (bouncers), story spreads quickly. Sadly enough, the owner might not even read these reviews.
I will miss the crowd for sure as that was the best and biggest reason for me coming there, other than that I will not miss the idiotism that I have experienced.

I've always hated the arbitrary ways that clubs can choose their patrons in Toronto. The other night, we went to the Devil's Martini for my girlfriend's birthday because we had heard good things. We put 8 people on the guestlist, all of us in our late 20s. We took a cab across the city, stood excitedly in line while the bouncer, Jason, looked over our IDs. Then, he asked my friend for another piece of ID or else step out of line. The picture looked like her, she was 27, she had her debit and credit cards with her. It hurt us, upset us tremendously. Why would they single her out? It saddened me to know that my friends truly believed that it was because we were south-asian and oriental - in a crowd of almost exclusively Caucasians. (The black guy in line before us was also turned away.) Otherwise, why would they dismiss a group of well-dressed, professional individuals with money to spend at their establishment?
Yes, clubs want to keep up appearances - that they have the power to choose the type of crowds they want (dresscodes, age restrictions). But at least be upfront about it. I'd respect you more if you were honest about being a bigot.

I've had very different experiences at this place, but one was downright HORRIBLE. It was in the winter, and we'd had a few drinks. Not realizing what time it was, I ordered a drink just after last call, when they told me what time it was, I asked for water. Well, as I was waiting for water, a "friendly" female bouncer came and told me it was time for me to leave. I did nothing wrong. I told them I was with people and just ordering water, but she grabbed my arm and took me to the back. She would NOT let me go find my friends, and she did not seem to have any success finding them either. So she actually kicked me out. By myself. In winter. Without my coat. It was a horrible experience, and if ANYTHING had happened to me, the onus would have been on them. As in GIGANTIC lawsuit. Awful, awful experience.

Went to Devil's Martini back in April and it was a good time. However went back again yesterday and it was HORRIBLE. I will never go there again. We arrived early at 10:15pm trying to beat the notoriously long line. We waited for well over 1.5 hrs and only made it within 15 feet of the door. Meanwhile people were leaving frequently and sayin the club was empty inside and it sucked. The bouncers only let in people who greased them $10-$20 each through the side enterance. Eventually we left and went elsewhere. Most people got fed up and left the line. They need to get rid of all their bouncers.

This place is HORRIBLE!! The people running this place need to go back to school and learn how to properly run a business because its obvious that they have NO CLUE what they are doing.
I once went there in a group of about 20...one friend of mine was wearing running shoes...nice ones too..puma's...they gave him the BIGGEST hassle about it. We finally argued our way in after a while. I go into the place, i see about 3 guys wearing running shoes INSIDE already!! What the hell??!?!
That's not all....A few of my friends are turning 25 in august...they were guys...the bouncers totally rejected them at the door. Is it that big of a difference if they are turning 25 in one month!!!??? As if 1 bloody month is gonna change them somehow or make them more "sutiable" for devil's martini "standards"...SO DUMB!!! AND on top of that...i was talking to a friend of mine the next day (who is going to be 25 in october)....he was at devils that same night and he got in fine!!! The bouncers totally let him in! Honestly....they need to be A LOT more consistent with things....they were making such a big deal about how they are trying to "attract a certain crowd" and how they are being "more strict" with things like that...gimme a break...if your gonna have anal ass rules like that....THEN BE CONSISTENT WITH THEM!!!
I usually never pull out the race card unless i truely feel like its there....but seriously i think a lot of it totally had to do with colour. So if your looking to go to a place where you can just have fun, chill, and not worry about dealing with dumbass bouncers who have no clue what the hell they are doing...then i suggest you go somewhere other than Devil's martini. It really sucks. Never going back there again. I thought it was about time somebody said something...seeing how those idiots at devil's don't know how to be clear about their rules.

Devil's use to be a lot of fun... It seems, however, that the staff is in it more for themselves then the patrons. We had to wait an hour in line because we did not give the bouncer $10 / head (price to jump the line). The bartender took a long time to serve us..and then wanted to shake my hand when I set up a tab (cheesy!). I plan to give it a year and wait and see if Devil's can make a comeback.

The security at this place needs to be monitored!! They manhandle you and swear at you to get you out of the way!! One bouncer in particular was laughing with two girls in miniskirts yelling and pushing people in between his flirting. Who hires these assholes??? Other than that, I guess the place was okay. The lineup was about 1.5 hrs, but at least the drinks weren't watered down..but the good stuff at this place is definitely not enough to outway the the treatment the bouncers give to the guests who provide the business to keep their damn jobs.

Heard some stuff about this place, so I was curious and went on a friday night. the lineup was unnecessarily long. I waited an hour and 20 minutes in line only to get into a half empty club. the music was not too great, the crowd was snooty although why I am not sure...need to be REALLY drunk to even look at some of the people there. Bouncers were probably the biggest jerks I have ever met. The bartenders were really nice.

As noted by the reviewer "Mover Dave", the lines in front of Devil's Martini are disgusting. For such a huge club, there should be no reason to keep people waiting outside. The pretentious attitudes of the club, coincide with the behavious of their bouncers/rent-a-cops. It was -28 last night, and even during early hours (like 11:00 pm), they were making people waite forever. At such bitter cold temperatures, hypothermia can set in as quickly as 12 mins, but the jackasses at the doors didnt seem to care because they were wearing parkas and fur hats. I guess they seemed to forget that YOU the clubgoer are doing THEM the favor by choosing to attend the club and spend YOUR money. Unless you know someone at the door, grease the bouncer (disgusting I know), or offer the bouncer some sexual favour be prepared to waite... a LONG time. Dont waste your time, there are too many other good clubs just waiting to host you a good party. oh yeah.. and beware the cougars, you may wanna have yourself checked into a clinic after 'encountering' them.

This place is BUSY. I don't know how the line stays so long with the number of people they let in anyway. JAM PACKED. Their dance floor? Ok, it's one huge long room, with a big long bar along one wall, and a dj and another bar on the other side, and everyone just stands around bobbing with martinis in hand (which spill everywhere, by the way).
Definetly a meat market, but otherwise all right. Some very cute guys there. It's an older crowd, 25+'ish for the most part. Much less college/uni students than the annex , so more mature/intelligent. ;)
The basement is a nice retreat from the squirm fest upstairs, much quieter. And my god their bathrooms are NICE. LOADS of friendly security too, felt very safe, much less grimy and dirty than other clubs. Not as big as the phoenix or govnmt of course, but still a good size to wander/squirm through.
The music is a tad lame, a lot of 80's and early 90's tunes on saturday, but they threw in some really good songs too. It's possible to talk over the music, you'll just have a sore throat the next day.
But yes, definetly go early, because the line starts building around 9pm.
