    I ate here last night.

    Boss took us out, after reading the reviews, I thought this was going to be a bad evening.

    First of all, I think that all of the 12 postings that came in around the week of Feb 5-12, 2010 are fake, and submitted by the same person. If you look at the frequency of reviews on this site for restaurants, it's usually one review every week or two weeks. I think someone had a bad experience, or got fired and wanted to be nasty.

    Anyways, here is my experience:
    Menu - too limited, even their chicken isn't 'chicken' it's a cornish hen smashed with a brick.
    Wine list - excellent.
    Service - fine. No one was rude, people were friendly, but not overly friendly.

    I had the salt cod - delicious; wild boar gnocchi - excellent, reminds me of the meals I had in Cinqueterra.

    Boss had a berkshire pizza - looked good, he loved it, and then he had the striploin which he loved. He had the peach strudel and liked it.

    It was fine.

    My partner and I went there on a Thursday night for dinner and experienced TERRIBLE service.

    The waiter knocked over a bottle of olive oil sitting on the communal table and the oil splashed on my beige coloured jacket - with large oil spots.

    He didn't even so much as to say "sorry". He said "oops" and gave me a couple of extra napkins. Then acted like nothing else is wrong. Don't even offer to help with a dry cleaning bill ... or even a cup of coffee on the house? Our order wasn't even taken yet ... so we stood up and told the hostess that we were leaving and the reason why. She didn't even offer to speak with a Manager about what happened.

    Bad Bad customer service.

    Glad we didn't waste any $$ on the food that night.

    LOL... why blame martiniboys? They wrote a cool piece on L'unita. If diners/readers want to express themselves, don't blame the site. Giving people an outlet to say how they feel is always a good thing. Even if it's bad. Anyway, you don't really say what the problem was, so your post is moot.

    How hilarious! I want to work at Martiniboys and do nothing but continue to tarnish whatever integrity this site has left. Keep posting the comical bogus "reviews" without any substance what so ever! Guys, at least get your act together...post something that actually makes sense! So far, the flurry of back to back to back posts of nonsense just show how stupid you guys actually are. Keep 'em coming!

    Had dinner at L'Unita last week and was not impressed with the food or the service. Food choices are not that varied on the menu and server seemed annoyed. I do not recommend L'Unita - many other great places in the area.

    How sad when the people behind this very website don't deal with rejection well! Four outrageously silly (and obviously emotionally driven) posts within a matter of hours slagging this restaurant without merit or any substance at all. "Debra, Alan & Joshua" cannot put together anything that actually makes any sense here! The readers and people have voted with their feet for the past 2 years making this restaurant without a doubt one of the best in the city on all levels. Shame on this tabloid of a website for promoting and glorifying these fake posts of people who have nothing better to do than embarress themselves.

    I took a client from to L'Unita last Friday evening for dinner. Menu is horrible. If you are a vegetarin, do not visit this place. Every dish on the menu has boar & duck. (Boar...?) There are no meatless dishes. Breadsticks were stale, app's had freezer burn & my pasta dish tasted like it was deep fried in a pot of used oil. (As my colleague described it: "It tasted like the oil was previously used to deep fry some type of meat") Service was horrible. Our waiter was very sarcastic when we asked him questions about certain dishes. He appeared to be annoyed with our inquiries & spoke to us like we were stupid children. We left very unsatisfied & were amazed that a restaurant in that area would hire a server with no people skills and a chef unable to cook. I was embarrassed that I took my client to one of the worst places in Toronto. Even if the food wasn't that great, at least the service could have been.

    I am not sure how this food can be rated excellent. I can barely say decent.

    If you like over inflated prices, terrible food and want to be seen this is the place to go.

    You're better off going to Mercato and having real homemade meal. And this is NOT a NYC quality restaurant.

    Best service we have received yet in Toronto! Our waiter was bright, intelligent, savvy and witty which made for a most enjoyable night celebrating by brothers graduation. Food was top notch (especially the ricotta and sweet pea agnolotti, seared sardines and strawberry crespelle), as were the wine and dessert wine recommendations. Lovely room with a warm urban feel. Will definitely return to try the rest of the menu!

    Enjoyed a wonderful dinner with our family and friends this past weekend in celebration of a milestone achievement. The staff went out of their way to make our group feel welcome and helped accommodate all of our needs throughout the evening. Our guests raved over the food (salumi board, grilled scamorza, blood orange salad, lobster risotto, braised lamb shank, arctic char and gorgonzola gnocchi) all being our favourites. Our wine aficionado of the group noted the wine list to be one of the best Italian lists in the city. We enjoyed 3 reds and 2 whites plus dessert wine with the recommendation of our server. Ambiance was lively and convivial, even though the room was crowded and noisy at times. The management made up for our wait by offering a lovely Italian sparkling with their compliments. They also did not charge us a plating fee for the desserts we brought in. My guests had a great time, and I am so glad we chose this restaurant for our special evening! Well done L'Unita!

    19. PJ's Review :: December 2, 2008
    We had a very nice meal. Everything was friendly and efficient UNTIL - suddenly, the server started bringing us bottles of water we did not ask for. When asked, we said, 'regular tap water will be fine'. The server brought out one bottle, then another while we were still on the first sip, quickly enough for us not to notice. The third time, we finally caught him and reminded him that we did not order any water. He continued to open the third bottle of water, stating 'everyone needs to be hydrated.' It became a joke at this point. The bill came, and we were charged nearly $30 for water!!! Hmmm. It'll be a while before I go back there. There's nothing I can't stand more than patronizing servers who talk back rudely and bring items without consent. NOTHING!!! I hope this isn't a restaurant policy, but simply a punk server trying to make some extra tip money. Unfortunately his tip went towards the water on the bill... Lesson learned, hopefully.

    20. Jack Ison's Review :: November 9, 2008
    Wonderful dinner this past weekend with my wife and children. There was something on the neat little menu for all of us, which is usually difficult when dining with young ones. My wife and I shared the rabbit and fontina arancine (the best version I have ever had), the fresh sardines which were excellent then had the osso buco saffron risotto and the roasted black cod with lobster brodetto. Our kids were content with the pizza and pasta offerings, and our server even went out of her way to take the kids into the kitchen to see the chefs at work. Over all, an amazing experience with charmed service and honest fresh food. BTW, the mascarpone canoli are to die for! The only concern is the room gets loud and full with people packed in everywhere. Ask for a table in the back away from the door.

    21. Sara Bianchi's Review :: May 31, 2008
    Was back last night at L'unita for the third time since opening...still as perfect as ever. We enjoyed the sweet pea risotto with house pickled wild ramps and the goat cheese and treviso ravioli. Both dishes were sublime:) Atmosphere was bustling and full of energy...just the way we like our neighbourhood restaurant to be! We saw some famous faces, a top chef, and all the well-heeled ladies and gents of the 'hood'. As always, service was top notch...everyone is treated with the same enthusiastic charisma. As for the previous poster...this place was never the 'it spot', nor is it a 'trendy' place. It seems like that is all you are looking for...venture south of Bloor please! I know for a fact that the boys there go out of there way to return every phone call and email request for reservations (at least mine and all of my friends and neighbours). Keep up the great works guys, and thank you so much again for moving into our neighbourhood.

    Of course this restaurant is new and naturally would be difficult to get a reservation at, but after trying several times to get a reservation with out so much as a return phone call, I will not be bothering anymore. Once the new "it spot" emerges and they aren't getting as many requests for reservations, perhaps they will think about all those unreturned phone calls.

    23. Ben Reed's Review :: May 20, 2008
    Recently had the pleasure of having a spectacular dinner at L'Unita this past week. What a great addition to the neighbourhood! Having been in NYC for the past year, coming back to Ave and Dav presented us with a much needed fresh, proper restaurant serving bright seasonal food! The room is bang on cool, and the service right from the charming hostess to our server was excellent and intelligent. We started off with fresh sardines and tuna crudo which were both perfect. As a second course, we shared the artisanal salumi which offered local products from Niagara and imported Italian prosciutto and garnishes. Suberb! For entrees we shared the ricotta and crab stuffed handmade pasta, as well as a perfectly grilled organic pork chop. We added sides of asparagus and gorgonzola gnocci. The meal was flawless. Our server offered a dessert menu featuring the best mascarpone canoli I have ever had! New York City has nothing on these guys. We also noticed a local cheese program, and an collection of interesting local and Italian dessert wines. Must come back to try some! Great selection of wines by the glass (about 16 in all!) featuring wines from Niagara and Italy. Very cool local vibe, with great music and very flattering lighting. Our new fav in Toronto.

    I wish we could provide a more comprehensive review but we were thrown out of this too-cool-for you place on Saturday March 29th by an irate little man before we even had a chance to sit down. Let me explain. It was truly operatic. We had an 8:30pm reservation. One couple arrived just past 8 to have a drink first. The other couple arrived on time at 8:30. We were told our table was "just paying the bill" and we would be seated momentarily. Mysteriously, "our table" did not clear until 9:15. At which point the owner escorted another party of 4 who we believe had arrived much later than us to "our table". At 9:35, over ONE HOUR AFTER we had reserved, with no form explanation or apology, and barely-there bar service in the meantime, we were offered another table. The hostess was asked by one of our party why the first table had been given away. The hostess told us that the owner gave it to another party and she did not know why, but that he just does things like that sometimes. So one of our party asked the owner, whose name is Sam, why he had done that. Fair question? Apparently not. Sam had a full blown tantrum, told the offending customer to get out of his establishment, that he does not need people yelling at him in his own restaurant (for the record, noone yelled at Sam) and motioned us out like some kind of deranged artistic director. He plucked another foursome from his busy bar area and dramatically showed them to the table. His message to us was: See? L'Unita does not need to explain why they can't honour a reservation because they have so many people just dying to eat their pasta and veal chops. L'Unita does not serve people who ask at the very least to be treated fairly, even if prompt service is not an option.

    The offending customer was also told to "be better behaved" on future outings. If the outburst were not so utterly surreal (and quite possibly drug-induced), it would have been humiliating to four 40-something Bay Street professionals. Happliy, we were able to satisfy our appetites for good food and impeccable, seamless, friendly and fair service at Scaramouche just up the road. Unless Sam's behaviour improves, it seems that L'Unita might just meet the same fate as the once popular, overrated and now defunct Luce. A little old-fashioned, uncontrived good service and grace goes a long way in an industry where reputation is everything.

    25. M. Sudderton's Review :: March 12, 2008
    Unfortunately, I can't say I had a good experience: although the food was on the decent side, our server did not care about us, nobody aproached us to see if our meal was going well, nobody thanked us on our way out, prices are on the mid-high range and if you take portions into consideration the are high, noise level is a problem, the patrons that night are a some of the best looking bunch I've seen gathered; still the overall atmosphere and experience wer cold and uncharming.

    L'Unita struck me as a another one of those trendy new places with lots of toronto press buzz, where if you scratch the surface a bit you don't find a lot of soul. We support places of all sorts of price levels like Le Select Bistro, Citizen, El Torito, Colborne Lane, J. Kennedy Wine Bar, Terroni, Milagro, Splendido, Cava & 7numbers (all of which have their particular faults) but offer patrons what we believe is central to their success: good food, a pleasant atmosphere, genuine caring service, true value & an understanding of guest expectations; where you feel as comfortable eating and drinking as you do a your own home, the magic that makes some restaurants last and others perish....

    If Jesus came back to earth as a pork chop, it would be the one I had at L'unita. Juicy, light, simple, exquisite. Served with just a few shallots, it was a marvelous thing. We also had some of the fig and prosciutto pizza, also amazing. The decor, the service, were all very good. It was the best dinner out that we have had in Toronto in some time. Sadly, the secret is out and getting a table is a real challenge. We had to sit at the bar, so I cannot vouch for the regular seating. However, the bar tender was charming, the wine flowed freely. We are going back as soon as we can get in!
