Location: 23 Avenue A, New York, NY
erba Buena literally means good herb in Spanish. When a restaurant gives themselves a name like that, two things better be true. First, they should serve plenty of fresh and flavorful food; and second, it best be damn good. Both of those requirements appear to be true at this East Village restaurant with its concise menu which takes patrons on a tour of Latin America.
From Peruvian red snapper ceviche, Cuban rojo vieja (shredded beef in a tomato sauce), and plenty of Argentinean grilled meets like the roasted suckling pig, make no mistake, there is no fusion business here; distinct flavors of each nation are properly represented. No wonder the restaurant seems to know what they are doing, general manager Giovanny Campos and chef Lenis Gonsalez hail from the now defunct Patria, home to one of the best Cuban sandwiches in the city. On the extensive cocktail list, don't miss out on the signature Yerba Buena Mojito, made with the mint-like herb that the restaurant in named for. -C.S. | | |
