f you’re craving Persian cuisine in the New York, this restaurant is for you. Parvez Eliaas and his Iranian partner Kaz Bayati previously achieved great success with Persepolis on the Upper East Side seventeen years ago. Ever since then, it has been a popular dining spot for anyone in the mood for Middle Eastern treats. Eliaas and Bayati have decided to give the restaurant game another shot and the result is Shalizar, which can be found a mere 7 blocks away from the pair’s original dining spot.
Much like Persepolis, the Shalizar menu is loaded with traditional favourites like lamb and beef kebabs, sweet-and-sour-stews, and tasting trios of eggplant appetizers, yogurt spreads, and Persian salads. There are a few new additions like ash-e-resteh (a Persian green vegetable and noodle soup) and an expanded bar that serves up fancy cocktails like pomegranate martinis and mojitos, but overall the food is remarkably similar. The only real difference between the two locations is Shalizar’s slightly more upscale building and design. So, if you refused to eat in Persepolis because you didn’t feel that it was appropriate to your class level, then you simply must visit Shalizar. But if you’re a Persepolis fan, then you probably won’t be too impressed and would be better suited to visiting the old location. This restaurant isn’t bad by any means.
