arger and more accessible than its half-sibling across the way, this new black-and-white home for Yohji Yamamato and Adidas' collaboration – a sports-inspired, super-stylish line of clothing and sneakers – is the first of its kind in NYC; another branch is set to open in SoHo.
t’s not news to anyone with an eye on the street that Japan has had a major influence on fashion over the past few years. In particular, the Asian mistress has successfully cornered the market on street wear, introducing us to ironically-obnoxious bright sneakers, hoodies adorned with hypnotic patterns and a plethora of cool accessories. While Nike SB sneakers are coveted by many, competitor Adidas has added some style to its classic tracksuits and line of footwear with the help of Yohji Yamamoto.
For those living under a rock, Yamamoto is the designer responsible for the Adidas Y-3 line, among many, many other ventures. The Japanese native is known for his avant-garde designs that eschew traditional trends. He tends to favor black paired with one other shade, although even he strays from his rules. Look at it as haute couture for Adidas.
Now, New York has the chance to snag Y-3 and make it their own. The store – like the clothes themselves – is modern and decidedly minimal. Located in the bustling district of SoHo, the shop features concrete floors, steel fixtures and shiny glass shelves. Creative types and trust-fund hipsters will feel right at home here, with Y-3’s edgy-yet-opulent atmosphere.
The features plenty of hip fashions that masterfully blend fashion and athletic wear into everyday, wearable pieces. Whether it’s a stylized running pant or a chic t-shirt fit for the club, Yamamoto never fails to impress. With his originality, everyone will be able to tell you’re wearing something from Y-3. Expect plenty of high-end sneakers that the plebes at Foot Locker will sorely miss (and be very envious of). If casual trendiness is your forte, check out Y-3. –D.C.
