Isn't it funny how the perfect gift becomes available right when you need it? And isn't it convenient that just when you have money to spend, there's a company offering you something you
absolutely need? Just one of those mysteries of the world, I guess. Starting Thursday, June 18, John Bartlett's first collection for Liz Claiborne,
Claiborne by John Bartlett will be available at its very own New York pop-up shop. And by golly, that's just three days before Father's Day! What are the odds?
If you
are looking for a gift for pops, this pop-up shop will have you covered (imagine that). Sometimes it can be hard to try to dress your father in high-fashion, but Bartlett has taken the accessible route and unleashed a whole line of designer clothing without the designer trappings. Bartlett's ideal customer isn't the high-powered executive or the globetrotting culture-hog. Instead, he's looking to reach the somewhat discerning everyman – a Joe Six Pack, but a Joe Six Pack who chooses Samuel Adams over Budweiser.
Okay, maybe that's not entirely true; this menswear line is accessible, but it is still discriminating. Leather jackets, collared shirts, sport coats and polos – they're all the type of clothing you'd find in the average guy's closet, but these bad boys are a little step above what you'd regularly find. After all, this is John Bartlett designing the clothes, and the former Harvard sociology major is known for playing with the strict, traditional bonds of men's fashion.
Upon first glance, some of this clothing may seem run-of-the-mill, but then you start to notice the immense detail that has gone into each piece. Fabrics are updated, trimmings and linings are carefully adjusted for the piece, and little touches like hidden iPod cord loops inside jackets leave room for the 21st century lifestyle. Bartlett's main strength has been designing clothes that are commonplace, but hardly average.
The pop-up shop will carry a ton of shorts, polos, and sport coats, and miraculously, they won't bankrupt you. The store will only stick around for four days, though, so if you want more oddly convenient shopping, you'll have to wait until the next cash-sucking holiday comes around. – R.T.
Claiborne by John Bartlett will run from Thursday, June 18 until Monday, June 22.
