Certain labels connote specific seasons. For me, J. Crew is autumn (I know, you think spring, but you're wrong). Therefore, the timing for this new shop - face it, the air is getting crisp - is perfect. Now who fancies a drop of whiskey (more on that later)?
Sorry women and children, all you'll find here is sartorial envy. This is J. Crew's first men's only outpost. The house has always relied on cleanly cut clothing for men (i.e. not man boys), preferably with a penchant for well-worn stubble and soft ties. This space brings together J.'s latest menswear lines and that, in and of itself, isn't particularly interesting. Instead, it's the room that will pique your interest.
An intriguing fusion of location, space, and product, J. Crew TriBeCa manages a compelling cohesion of style and content. J. Crew fits the neighborhood like a proverbial glove and booze fits J. Crew like a life jacket. Thus, this shop - which takes over from the long defunct Liquor Store Bar - drips of apropos connections.
While now dotted with Banana Republic-bating fashions, the space does retain shots of the old incarnation's aesthetic, replete with the old bar still in place. Look for a fittingly dark palette, boys' club flourishes (i.e. a disused fireplace, oil paintings) and classy touches that compliment the clothing.
Don't shave for a day, throw on your favorite cardigan, sneak a surreptitious sip of whiskey, and amble into TriBeCa's new J. Crew menswear shop. -S.T.
