Generating a lot of buzz since opening in September 2006, Fat Cat Wine Bar (331) is assuredly a local favourite. The ambiance is divinely serene, a space where you can sip the vin du jour while enjoying a plate of pheasant and pistachio terrine. Split between classic table dining and comfy lounge, the terrace at the rear is a leafy paradise that encourages exhaustive wine tasting. After all, wine connoisseurs ought keep up with the times, and since Fat Cat’s list is updated constantly, they conveniently (and cost-effectively) provide 2-ounce samplings.

While River Restaurant (413) may appear as a cocktail lounge at first sight, as dimmed lighting and black leather couches at the entrance attest, a wander through the narrow corridor reveals a finer dining experience. High-backed plush seats in rosy luminance add the touch of luxury, designed to beget an exquisite culinary affair. The menu is somewhere between upscale and casual, spanning burgers and sandwiches to skillfully prepared pastas and steaks. Drawing in wining-and-dining couples, their kids’ menu includes your offspring in the eating experience too.

A true Roncesvalles veteran, Shala-Mar (391) has been in operation for 19 years, way way before the area became so trendy. The façade is quite notable, a beautiful cascading mosaic of coloured pebbles stream over the doorway and windows. The innards of this Indian and Pakistani resto are just as handsome, with a pinched-fabric ceiling, hand carved screens and a teardrop table that seats eight. Anticipate exotic spices, local celebs, and—of course—reservations.
