Back in the early to mid '80s
Sonic Youth were on top of their game: respected, successful, and…well… youthful. Now much older (and greyer), married (some of them to each other), and living in the suburbs,
Sonic Youth somehow still manages to be much cooler than most bands getting the blog-buzz nowadays, and contrary to what many people must have thought when they heard those first atonal blasts of noise, their music has stood the test of time. Their current live show is heavily skewed towards their newest album,
The Eternal (when I saw them in Toronto, they played every single song), but it sounds great live, and when they do pull out classics like "Death Valley '69," you'll be reveling in every detuned noise "solo" and Kim Gordon moan-scream. Or, at least I will.
Sonic Youth play the United Palace Theatre tonight (July 3).
