Full of waif like fashion assistants all vying for Vanity Fair’s top spot and the who’s who of the foodie world, the exclusivity of Graydon Carter’s Waverly Inn & Garden resto has reached mammoth proportions. Slated to to the public open in the Fall 2007, the resto presently operates as a hang-out for New York’s philistines (i.e. the foodie and fashion crowd) by barring out the plebeians until the elites have exhausted the venue. The chance that the floo r of the adjoined double town house dining room collapses before the official opening is an equally plausible possibility – though this could be a good thing for fashionistas looking to eliminate the competition.
Until then, you can gain entry by begging/groveling at the feet of your well-heeled contacts to search their Blackberry for that exclusive contact number. Those without connects (or personal limo & driver combos) are S.O. L. and will have to wait until the fall for the West Village leftovers.
Until then, allow me to inform you what you'll be missing out on in the meantime and in-between time. Truffle oil is utilized generously through the menu (from the macaroni and cheese to the fries) for select individuals seeking that post-nosh eau de Truffle scent (or stink). The cuisine de la mer is equally well executed with dishes that range from tuna or salmon tartares for apps and the sole (fresh off the coast of Dover).
If you fancy yourself as someone worthy enough to bask in their own self-importance at such a level that others might start to believe you (read: celebrities), then you already know what this place is about and have made the necessary calls to gain access. For those on the outside (read: Dlist and below), either hunt down that well-connected sugar daddy or make a sextape to get some free publicity and that elusive reservation contact number.

14 Reader Reviews | I went here once with my boyfriend and lets just say we wont be back anytime soon, the crowd was good, I recommend dressing up. Yummy :) BUT the decor is boring, whats with the menu ? ohhhhh and the food is way over priced. I think everyone should give it a try at least once.

4 stars for the space and great vibe. Maybe 3 for the food. But I wasn't paying so why should I complain?

Good luck getting in, but it's worth it! Small enough that every meal is like a private party, with (fairly) good service and imaginative food. Go with a group!

Come here for the scene. Come here for the bar. Just don't come here to eat, because you will undoubtedly be disappointed. Not that the food is bad, per se. It just isn't anything special. A good idea, but really just not executed well. All style and no substance.

We had been anxiously awaiting the opening of this restaurant because we live relatively close to it and the decor is sleek and beautiful. Last night we decided to bring a couple of friends with us. We were not disappointed with the the restaurant, but the food portions were miniscule and the prices were unusually large. We all agreed that if the food was of the highest quality, it may have been worth it. Unfortunately, it was more on the average side.

Our food was excellent. The atmosphere is pure A-list. There are certainly a few kinks that need to be worked out, but if they improved the availability of wine (we tried two times to order "another bottle of the same" only to be told it wasn't available) and explained the way the menu works more clearly, it would be a near-perfect dinner.

I am stingy with my four stars. I don't just give them away, like they're falling out of trees. So over the weekend I visited The Waverly Inn, one of the latest hard-to-get-in places. I heard about this place time when I lived in the outer area. And upon my revisit, it reminded me how much I used to LOVE this place, in an earlier incarnation. And it is absolutely rocking now - with unusually high-grade faces. So, it definitely deserves the four star treatment!

A 'seen and be seen' place, The Waverly has a quaint rustic-themed dining room complete with fresh floral arrangements. The cuisine is Nouveau American, almost bordering trite. The side dishes were tastier than their main courses, but none of this compares to the manic, high-calibre crowd. P.L.

It's next-to-impossible to get by the door, very expensive, and always crowded – odd for a place that doesn't officially open until the fall. But, as one of the purveyors of "euro cool" and in the publishing industry, I have managed to find my way in, and found the whole vibe very alluring. And exclusive. Strange. Or maybe that's a good thing, depending on your perspective...
