Review by Ellen Jakobsmeier |
ince the gentrification of Soho, East Village, Lower East Side (need I go on?), struggling artists, basement revolutionaries and boho types alike have flocked to the more affordable Brooklyn where rent doesn’t cost two months pay. This café cum bookstore cum publishing house aims to be the voice of the people (a rough Latin translation of the café’s moniker).
Employing a sustainable philosophy regarding the construction of the venue, the recent addition of a recycled-glass counter top and mahogany bar built by a local lumber salvage company validates their claim. Live music events, open-mic Sundays (express yourself!), and the promotion of local politics are all integral feature to the grassroots-friendly micro-publishers. If that doesn’t entice you, perhaps the vegan and vegetarian offerings or organic free trade certified coffee will.
