Review by Ellen Jakobsmeier |
ddly enough, the French bistro in the East Village did not decide arbre as the moniker but instead opted for the English translation. Obviously this calculated move was to attract a group of diners who would not be put off by a pretentious vibe that often accompanies anything French (not a fact but an observation).
Most mains on the menu are under $20 – an excellent price point for artists in the area – and the wine is reasonably priced as well. Of course the usual French cuisine – escargots, Mesclun Salad, Steak au Poivre – are available but the simplicity of the tiny venue and local crowd (that spills onto the patio during the summer months) creates a welcoming vibe without an elitist attitude.
