At Socialista, it's all about exchanges: Armin Amiri offers up a hip, new Cuban-themed space in exchange for the pep and pizzazz of his well-heeled clientele. You bring your energy, he gives you a place to chill. The concept seems simple enough but Amiri, a former Bungalow 8 doorman, is a first-time entrepreneur venturing into unfamiliar waters.
Amiri, who grew up in Persia and later Vienna, has really reached for the stars with Socialista, an exclusive cafe and club set in the meatpacking district. Although he's never been to Cuba, it is a country that has inspired him in his new venture. The walls are smothered in a vibrant teal, a color I always associate with the crumbling buildings that line Cuba’s Malecon. Mahogany tables and faux palm tress complete the décor which is comfortable and bright.
A limited menu will serve light Latin fare accompanied by cocktails mixed by a professionally trained bartender. Oh yeah, and did I mention the $600 table minimum? With Sting and wife, Trudie Styler as investors, you can’t let just anyone through the door. If there’s anyone who knows that, it’s Amiri.
