N amed after Oscar Tshirky, author of The Cookbook by Oscar of The Waldorf this Oscar’s is an American brasserie that serves up Waldorf’s classics with a contemporary twist under the professional eye of Executive Chef Alan Ashkinaze.
Oscar Tshirky joined the Waldorf=Astoria shortly before it opened in 1893 and was associated with the hotel for five decades afterwards. While it is not rumored that his ghost still haunts the hotel, his influence has seemed into the food in many ways. Oscar’s Waldorf Salad is made with Grammy Smith and Gala apples, adorned with candied walnuts. Other dishes that bare his moniker include the Chicken pot pie and Root Beer Float although I’m pretty sure that Root Beer was still being used to treat mouth sores while the real Oscar was still alive. –L.D.
