Battle fro-yo is on in the Big Apple with the latest entry, the green-friendly Greek Öko, attempting to take down such loved ice cream spots as Grom, Pinkberry and Yolato. In the wake of Pinkberry’s recent rat-footage scandal (a parade of the filthy creatures frolicking in the kitchen was broadcast on National TV at PB’s NYC location), Öko has a chance to stand up to the beloved “frozen yogurt” shop.
The freshly made frozen treats are made every day by chef Deborah Stanton (of the eponymous West Village resto) and a variety of toppings are available (i.e. blackberries, mango chunks, chocolate ganache, shaved coconut, dried Turkish apricots) to enhance the flavors. The store goes the green route where ever it can with a sunflower seed inspired counter, potato starch straws and spoons, and processed corn plates. If the ice cream doesn’t fill you up, you can always munch on the utensils.
