he waffle has always been a Sunday morning hangover favorite and will continue to be as long as people keep drinking on Saturday nights. Although there are quite a few waffle venues in the city to satisfy the collective Sunday morning cravings, there aren’t any that don’t break the bank with pretentious Parisian prices. Luckily, a little slice of Belgium has opened up in Manhattan that serves up the favorite dish at a low, low cost.
The waffles at Le Petit Belge are a cut above their competitors. The difference lays in their secret ingredient: beet sugar. The root compote doesn’t dissolve completely when baked which leaves the waffles with a pleasant crunch to them.
In Belgium, waffles are eaten plain, but Le Petit Belge has made exceptions for its American customers. Toppings include homemade chocolate ganache, fruit and caramel. Aside from waffles, the Poffies are a star attraction with their pancake and ice-cream stuffed cones. Madeleines, Pralines and Belgian chocolate are also on sale for the lover of all things Belgian. –J.T.
