he name means “jewel box” in Japanese (sort of), and it really seems to fit. The restaurant is like a hidden jewel in the East Village, while the interior will remind you of being inside an actual jewel box. The whole place is small and tunnel-shaped with gilded bamboo forming a sort of golden arch (but not like McDonalds, I swear). The main draw is the fish: over 50 varieties, all creatively designed with ingredients that are flown in daily.
But if you’re truly lucky, you’ll get a seat at the highly coveted six-seat sushi bar, where expert sushi-chefs slice and roll like true experts. It’s as much a show as it is a dining experience. Also, keep an eye out for owner Jack Lamb to come explain every wine and sake, recommending a certain bottle for each dish. Beats having to figure it out yourself, right.
