f you’ve ever been to Spain, you know that the food is spicy, tasty, and always great for picking at when you’re already full. This is the idea behind El Quinto Pino, which is a new Spanish tapas spot opened by Mani Dawes and chef Alex Raij. If you’re wondering what El Quinto Pino means, allow me to clarify: it translates as “the fifth pine.” Hope that clears everything up for you.
Besides the wacky name, this is a great spot for lounging and enjoying a few nibbles. Beware that the place is small, and not meant to impress you with their incredible décor. The goal of the resto is to create a lasting impression through the excellent flavors of their dishes- which I say isn’t done often enough. I’d definitely rather have a great meal in a moderately decorated spot than a crappy meal in a castle. No matter how fancy the table setting is, you can’t eat it when you’re still hungry because your meal tasted like crap.
Anyhow, lets divert back to El Quinto Pino and their menu. If you’re starving, a good bet is to order 2 tapas and chow down- or, go to the Keg if you’re looking for a big hunk of meat. You’re not going to get large meals here, so keep that in mind. It’s meant more so as a social spot for drinking and nibbling. Some of the tasty offerings are chickpea stew, garlic shrimp, or pig’s ear salad- I know, it sounds strange, but when in pseudo-Spain…
The staff is friendly enough, and willing to suggest special dishes if you’re confused. If the resto is busy, be prepared to stand and lounge with friends, as the only real seating space are the bar stools. Your best bet is to take El Quinto Pino for what it is, and to avoid going in with the expectation of eating a meal. It will be worth it in the end when you’re pleasantly drunk and snacking- the perfect combination.
