Review by Sylvonna Beech |
hocolat Michel Cluizel on 888 Broadway has opened a new dessert boutique. Located at ABC Carpet and Home, pastry chef Will Goldfarb concocts amazingly tasty dessert options that melt on the tongue. While the tiny space only accommodates a few people on their seven-stool bar, the overall space can hold 40 people. And let me tell you- it’s worth it to wait. If you’re a true chocolate lover like me, you’ll stand and wait for anything that has chocolate in it, near it, or even resembles it (ok, maybe not that far).
Dishes like Indonesian-vanilla ice cream reflect upon the Michel Cluizel aspects. The store also offers products such as coffees from all over the world and Chef Goldfarb’s own line of chemicals. I know what you’re thinking- what is a line of chemicals doing in a dessert shop? Well, any experienced baker knows that you need certain chemicals to make desserts taste scrumptious. For example, the chef stocks glyercin flakes, methylcellulose, and more. If you’re still confused as to where they enter your desserts, ask the next time you see shiny chocolate-peanut butter balls- glycerin is added to the chocolate to make it shiny and easier to work with (or so my Grandma says).
While the place isn’t huge, the flavor of the desserts are. Give the chocolate bubbles with espresso Jello a shot- anything from this highly respected pastry chef is worth a try. And just try and put the whole “wax in my dessert” idea out of your head- if it tastes good, who cares? |
