Bowery Wine Company

Review by Phil Brown
The Bowery Wine Company is the latest addition to the thoroughly gentrified section of the East End. Strategically located in a luxurious space on the bottom floor of a high-end condo, Bowery Wine Company is the newest nightspot in town to hobnob with a hearty selection of yuppies and tourists. The design and location are trendy as you'd expect in these parts, yet, oddly, generic enough to attract that crowd in vast numbers. And the presence of co-owner Bruce Willis ensures that you’ll probably get a spattering of celebrity watchers as well.

The bar occupies a surprisingly large space for an East End location. Simply surveying the room you might think you’ve wandered into a large loft space in the West End. But the décor will soon set you straight.

Black modern furniture, track lighting and a bizarre “mood bush” light that periodically changes color will instantly remind you that you’re in yuppie-eria. If you’re looking for a relaxing night surrounded by well-dressed people who love to discuss their annual dividends, then you’ll find this place to be a delight. But, if you’re more into a scene of angry disadvantaged youths looking to cause a ruckus, then you’ve wandered into the wrong part of town.

Considering the location and the expected clientele, the prices are shockingly reasonable (ex: a bottle of Australian Shiraz will only set you back $24.00). The food is quite noteworthy as well. The kitchen serves up a collection of appetizers, paninis, salads, and desserts that wouldn’t seem out of place at a bar or restaurant of this ilk. Owner/operator and celebrity hound (hence Willis) Chris Sileo has manufactured this spot to appeal to a very specific crowd and he’s picked a neighbourhood that claims home to plenty of them. Expect to see the patio stocked with a smattering of suits and evening dresses this summer.
