A t one time speakeasies were illegal drinkings holes where cold-sober, prohibition-era drinkers went to drink. Speakeasies were secret because they had to be; if too many people discovered them they'd be shut down. Today, speakeasies, like Milk and Honey or Raines Law Room, are hush-hush to attract customers, or at least to acquire caché. Like a game of hide and seek, you feel you've won once you've found one of these phoneless, addressless spots. But the newest speakeasy to enter the New York club scene, Avenue has both and address and a phone number. So, how, gentle reader, do you think Avenue still has speakeasy-status? The answer is simple: No googleability.
You best believe that Noah Tepperberg, owner of the Strategic Group, an event production and promotion company, as well as Marquee, a ubiquitous Manhattan club, will not make his tactically named Avenue accessible to all. With over 250,000,000 hits when you attempt to google Avenue, it's a new genre of club altogether – the cyber-speakeasy.
But the fact that Avenue is all but invisible in the interactive sphere is not the only piece of cultural collateral that gives the New York bar its caché. Actually, Avenue is about to earn its place in the Manhattan zeitgeist through an offering that is strangely practical: food. The gastrolounge, as Tepperberg terms it, will offer a variety of small plates that a drunk muncher would be hard-pressed to pass up. It seems no menu can be constructed these days without the inclusion of a top-tier burger, Avenue stays on this well worn road by proffering up Kobe beef sliders on brioche. But the swanky lounge also offers the fancy burger's counter part - the pretzel dog, a premium beef frankfurter wrapped in pretzel dough and served with spicy brown mustard & sea salt. Highlights of the feed file also include waffle cut French fries, sprinkled with white truffle oil and parmesan, a satay of tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, and charred angus filet of beef.
As for the cocktail list, expect upscale, up-priced and not necessarily original. But if you want to sip a Dom Perignon bellini in a club that was popular before it even opened – Tepperberg has compiled a permanent list – then head down the avenue to Avenue….Don't worry about spending too much money, you probably won't get in. – E.H

Was recently in Toronto and recommended to try this famous hot spot. We found the fare to be tasteless, and of poor quality. Service was poor and generally this restaurant needs to be re-vamped in our opinion. We would not come here again.

Not as good as the hype at least for brunch.

Food wasn't that great at Sunday brunch. Hotel is a gem, and the service was excellent.

I was surprised at the space. You'd be forgiven for thinking this was an over-the-top private club or, perhaps a private room.

I have been here multiple times and I really like it. I would highly recommend the burger sliders, its a great deal. I also like the uptight snob feel of the lounge as well. If your an uptight snob, then this is definitely a treat for you.

An old boy. But the hotel has a concierge who can schedule everything from Broadway in Chicago tickets to transport you to your next bar.

I am obsessed with this bar. When I crave a martini from Avenue, I am Homer Simpson daydreaming about donuts and beer.

This lady's showin' her age. For a Four Seasons, it doesn't measure up. I'm on the Executive level which helps, but not much. The afternoon tea is mediocre, but free.

I know it's soooo five years ago, and I always seem to miss the celebrity sightings here, but I am always consoled by the excellent drinks. The best of the bunch is the Avenue cocktail ($25.00!!). Trust me on this. It is made with gin, but utterly delicious. And with the lovely and talented ladies working that night, even better.

Re: Today. Avenue may be more than Toronto residents can appriciate. They seem to know the business and don't need crude and insulting revews from people that don't know price and quality in the same sentence. This establishment offers quality food and excellent service from a proffesional wait staff. Customers without a sense of dinning appriciation should stick to the Big Mac and Whopper joints!! I am embarrased about the poor reveiw I have read. Grow up and get a touch of class.

Truly disappointing. I dropped over $190 for a "fine dining lunch? for three and honestly could have found better frozen food. The concept was wonderful and the lounge was beautiful. Just disappointed in the quality of the food that you pay for. Understandable that the concept is a difficult one to master, but the staff could have truly done a better job. Good service seemed to be only given by server support staff and the waitstaff just didn't seem to care. I may be too critical but am in the restaurant business as well.

It was a really good time. Drinks were expensive but it was elegantly decorated and you could relax on the banquettes and cushions. Crowded but you could move, breathe and get a drink if you needed. All and all fun time, some cool people. Avenue is better decorated and classier than most Toronto lounges but nothing too spectacular.

Given the cachet and the power-schmoozing d?cor of Avenue, I really wanted to like this place... but the atrocious service simply left too much to be desired. We were seated at a comfortable solarium table for two perched over Yorkville Ave, and things looked fairly promising at first. I had to keep my optimism in check, however, when the server asked me, what was a Godmother martini (it's really not all THAT recherch? these days). In any case, the actual cocktail I was served was O.K., except it was almost half as empty/full? as my partner's... My sense of unfulfillment about this place was piqued all the more when our dizzy server did not return to refresh our drinks until well after I had been forced to consume inordinate quantities of Avenue bar snacks - almonds, olives and pearl onions (my hands needed something to distract themselves from the empty glass in front of me). This negligence happened not once, but twice, all the while preventing me
from getting a decent cocktail buzz of any kind. The only saving grace of my visit to Avenue was the "Tempting Fate" cocktail. It almost saved the whole experience for me (almost). You mostly taste the champagne, but among other things Raspberry Stoli, Brandy, I think Chambord, and then the champs. Exquisite. Overall, it's unfortunate that Avenue doesn't believe in ensuring that a polished, professional staff reflect the calibre of the ambience and drinks.

we love the cocktail waitresses, but not so much the lurching overbearing suits who try to micro manage this fine establishment. let us have some fun, after all we are paying for it, and don't dictate what we can wear, or else risk ending up with a bunch of boring haireds, sipping their one martini for hours before their 7pm curfew, will be interesting to see if they throw out a STAR during the festival for wearing ripped or torn $1000.00 jeans after 6pm... let us just see....

Whoever said youth is king? Avenue is anything but young. But hey, this place just oozes power. If you're seeking or just looking, older women with 20 something bodies or men with power outfits, this is the pace to find them. Gorgeous room, designer food combined with "A" list people, and you've got Avenue. Go for the food, the signature martinis or just to be seen, but go! Avenue.
