’m a big fan of Mexican food, but it’s often hard to find a decent place in New York serving up the goods. New York is one of the best cities in the world for multicultural fare, but in terms of Mexican food it’s no California (or Mexico). That’s why Acapulco is such a good find. The unassuming red, white, and green awning and lunch counter-esque interior could be any number of Mexican joints in the city. But the food is what makes the difference.
The menu offers authentic Mexican fare such as fajitas, huaraches, tortas, and tacos made the authentic way – with two soft corn tortillas. They also offer some more traditional westernized food such as burgers and fries, as well as tacos the non-authentic way, with hard shells, “for gringos and our Texan friends”. The food is extremely flavorful and dirt cheap. You can typically get a good hearty meal for less than 6 dollars (9 if you want a beer). I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. |
